Paul Van Dyk

If polls don’t lie, Paul van Dyk is one of the world’s greatest DJs — at least according to DJ Magazine. The German-born trance aficionado took the magazine’s top slot in its annual poll of the world’s best record spinners in 2005 and 2006, and has consistently appeared on the poll every year since 1998. Unlike some of his peers, the versatile van Dyk is equally adept at crafting his own tracks in the studio as well as remixing and scratching for the masses. His last two artist albums, 2003’s Reflections (which received a Grammy nomination for “Best Electronic/Dance Album”) and 2007’s In Between, contain some of the most exuberant trance anthems to come out of the scene in recent memory. Cuts like the euphoric “Time of Our Lives” and sweetly melodic “Another Sunday” are ideal for getting the crowds moving at late-night outdoor raves…or North Coast Music Festivals. Paul Kalkbrenner

German techno whiz Paul Kalkbrenner had already established himself as a musician before 2008, but that year also brought him a big career jump as he added the term “actor” to his steadily growing resume. In Berlin Calling, Kalkbrenner assumed the role of DJ Ickarus, whose touring plans are thrown out of whack when he’s forced into a psychiatric ward during a bad drug experience. Despite Kalkbrenner’s time spent acting he did not slack musically, contributing the film’s entire soundtrack. The track “Sky And Sand” became an international hit, which is remarkable when considering Kalkbrenner’s brand of techno. Instead of jugular-seizing melodies and basic drum parts, Kalkbrenner specializes in more minimal sounds, emphasizing the hypnotic and the textured. His current touring schedule finds him further celebrating the freedom he has embraced since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the event that allowed his career to happen in the first place. Orchard Lounge

Formed in Chicago back in 2000, house disco trio Orchard Lounge will provide enough electricity to drive any techno show. OL provides stylish DJ sets that can educate and reintroduce many to the eclectic house tech genre. With a mix of live band and turntable improvisation, Orchard Lounge has dominated numerous world-famous venues like Red Rocks and the Hammerstein Ballroom. Each member circulates their own musical influence into the group through their multi-genre backgrounds, ranging from a classically trained violinist to a guitar aficionado and even a hidden clarinet player. The obvious experience of the trio not only enlightens their house beats but provides a well versed foundation, grasping the attention of any techno enthusiast looking to expand their horizons. Orchard Lounge will not only get you pumped and moving, but will provide a surprisingly cultured twist to their energized volts of techno. (Friday, 4:30-5:30, North Stage) –text: Chris Pugh

M. Sylvia & DJ Kibo

If you hit the local clubs in Chicago and consider yourself a music connoisseur, I hope you know something about house music. If not, a collective of five DJs called NORdjs are here to acquaint you with it. Hailing from Central and Eastern Europe, they made a name for themselves in 2004 and quickly became renowned artists in Chicago’s best house clubs and bars. Two of the collective’s four reigning DJs, M. Sylvia and DJ KIBO, are teaming up at North Coast to polish up the masses with their arsenal of house and club music prowess. M. Sylvia is unwavering and unapologetic to spinning house, and does so with vigor. Accompanying her is DJ KIBO, who mixes it up with techno and club. Their approach to playing for a crowd is as wise as it is simple: One, formulate tracks that convert to the crowd’s energy. Two, keep that energy high and potent.
