Die Antwoord

A fascinating trio of Cape Town musicians whose stage names resemble internet handles, vigorous rappers Die Antwoord promise pop cultural relevance and momentum towards the future of hip-hop. They are the musical embodiment of a style known as “zef,” a South African catchphrase akin to the American “lowbrow.” Intense drum-work, heavy percussion, unabashed vulgarities and minimalist music videos that exemplify both basic energy and endearing film amateurism all work towards a singular image: full-disclosure, rampant, unapologetic and highly confident. The music is quirky, sexy and violent — all at once. Their tracks wed sleek digital-era sound effects with ‘90s house oddities that are part rap, part glitch, and all show. Following the Big Day Out festival circuit, 2012’s Ten$ion LP continues making this fearless band infamous. The name Die Antwoord itself is Afrikaans for “The Answer.” And while the question seems to change between records, Ninja, Yo-Landi VI$$er and DJ HI-Tek provide their answer in the form of in-your-face beats.
