Saturday, 2:30-5

Black Lips, Death From Above 1979, Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Fitz & the Tantrums, Dom, The Chain Gang of 1974, Super Mash Bros., and PerryEtty vs. Chris Cox will be performing at Lollapalooza 2011 between the hours of 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6.

BLACK LIPS
At the forefront of the current garage-punk revival, Atlanta’s Black Lips have been known more for their antics than their music. Not to say the band’s combination of doo-wop, blues and punk isn’t compelling, but with a high-profile feud with Wavves, a lot of expelled body fluids and the fleeing from India after making out with each other on stage, it’s difficult not to think of them as the indie rock answer to G.G. Allin. (Saturday, 3-4, PlayStation Stage) –text: James Podrasky

DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979
With a darkly boisterous, head-banging sound that can send many a fan to the chiropractor, DFA 1979 fuses hard-filtered punk with bursts of danceable riff-rock. The rhythmic Toronto duo of Sebastien Grainger (Bad Tits) and Jesse F. Keeler (MSTRKRFT) reunite for the first time since the band’s 2006 separation. Known for putting on aggressive live shows, DFA 1979 will unabashedly stand out on an otherwise peaceful Saturday afternoon in Grant Park. (Saturday, 4-5, Bud Light Stage) –text: Logan Malloy

MAYER HAWTHORNE & THE COUNTY
Mayer Hawthorne tends to confuse people, particularly with sophomore album How Do You Do, which brings contemporary soul to a retro sound. At first he invokes Smokey Robinson, The Isley Brothers, and countless other stars of Motown’s ‘50s and ‘60s-era heyday, which makes sense because he grew up outside Detroit. However — and here’s the confusing part — his visage of a genial-looking, suburban white guy in a vest and tie often throws off the uninitiated. FITZ & THE TANTRUMS
L.A.-based neo-soul outfit Fitz and the Tantrums owes its inception to lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick’s ex-girlfriend’s intervention: she led him to the vintage organ that inspired the band’s classic soul and Motown-tinged sound. Their debut album on Dangerbird Records led to a stint on the cult classic web series Live from Daryl’s House and a U.S. tour, with a high-energy show at Metro last February that drew sell-out crowds. (Saturday, 2:30-3:30, Music Unlimited Stage) –text: Anne Morrissy

DOM
Pieced together via a Craigslist ad, Dom is a Worchester, Mass.-based quartet that wholly embraces their indie slacker swagger. Lead singer Dom Simon dodges bill collectors and the IRS while writing savvy electro-pop songs filled with carefree lyrics and impressive guitar hooks. Dom’s songs are familiar, fun and frantic enough to serve as a backdrop to your next beer-filled cookout, or to be featured on the soundtrack of a teenage romantic comedy. (Saturday, 3:30-4:15, Google+ Stage) –text: Jason Pete

THE CHAIN GANG OF 1974
For some mid-day dancing and an intimate look at Lollapalooza’s hidden underdog, check out The Chain Gang of 1974 on the BMI stage. The stage is a little smaller and more tucked away, but Chain Gang will unleash a bass-driven frenzy that drives right into your chest, making you feel like you’re rockin’ one of the main stages. For fans of Daft Punk and Cake, Chain Gang will get you moving. (Saturday, 3:45-4:30, BMI Stage) –text: Brian Dorrans

SUPER MASH BROS
Call them DJs or mixtape masters, Super Mash Bros. are paving the path into the next generation of mash-ups with MacBook and fader at hand. The Los Angeles trio is “scientifically proven to get that booty movin’,” combining top 40 hits with electronic and hip-hop beats. Collectively, they create a music attention deficit dream come true. No dirty drops here, just a good old-fashioned dance party guaranteed to induce some frat-house flashbacks. (Saturday, 2:45-3:45, Perry’s) –text: Valerie Wojs

PERRYETTY VS CHRIS COX
If it weren’t for Perry Farrell, there’d be no Lollapalooza. So the Jane’s Addiction frontman pretty much has carte blanche at the festival he started 20 years ago. Farrell not only built a stage dedicated to his club kid alter-ego, but on that stage he and wife/vocalist Etty Lau will duel it to the disc jockey death with Chris Cox, noted for his work with Cher. Whoa dude. (Saturday, 3:45-4:45, Perry’s) –text: Selena Fragassi
