BY JONNA NEWBERRY
Minnesota-born Craig Finn is constantly performing. He can’t help it. Whether it’s with The Hold Steady or his own solo project, this time he’s got his boys from The Uptown Controllers in tow and is ready to perform his 2016 EP, Newmyer’s Roof. In this, Finn has departed from The Hold Steady’s raucous barroom anthems in favor of more dialed-back stories of struggle, 9/11 and optimism — all the while keeping his trademark third-person narrative lyrical style going strong. The title track “Newmyer’s Roof” is a slow-paced, heavy narrative ditty about Finn watching the World Trade Center Towers fall. With his sincere style deeply embedded within every note, get ready for an intimate set with this lonesome troubadour.
