BY JAMIE ROBASH
Norwegian avant-garde singer/songwriter Jenny Hval began making music under the moniker Rockettothesky, brewing up a slow and brooding mixture of deliciously eerie songs with ‘80s synth-pop leanings and puzzling poetic lyricism. She was soon plucked up by the ominously beautiful label Sacred Bones, through which she released Apocalypse, girl, which saw Hval wrestling with issues of gender and her early life growing up in the Norwegian Bible belt amidst a maddening myriad of ethereal and abstract pop. With its themes of vampire movies and artwork made from menstrual blood, her latest offering Blood Bitch delves even deeper into Hval’s musical phantasmagoria.
