Chromatics

‏Chromatics are one of indie rock’s best-kept secrets. In April, their fourth album Kill for Love (on Troubleman Unlimited’s dance imprint Italians Do It Better) cemented their reputation as a band on the rise — despite nearly ten years in the game. You may recognize their downtempo/electronic side from their song “Tick the Clock” that was featured in the all-star Drive OST. Chromatics are a digitally-enhanced rock band from Portland who maintain a true affinity for rock music that makes other electronic rock acts look like they’re just cashing in on a fad. Lead singer Ruth Radelet will steal your heart with her beautiful voice, complemented with spacey synths in the vein of dream-pop gods M83. Chromatics channel some of their bubbly songwriting and simple, stripped-down guitar riffs from dance rock forefathers like New Order while keeping things modern with a more Raveonettes-style approach to their love songs. Chromatics

The best way to explain the mysteriously dark and groovy sound of Portland’s Chromatics is music that could double as the soundtrack to an intense thriller — literally. The dark drums and eerie synths of single “Tick Of The Clock” gained public attention in 2011 after it was featured during the intro to the movie Drive. But before their cinematic success, these guys went through plenty of line-up changes. Originally conceived as a well reviewed punk quartet, a few rearrangements left vocalist Adam Miller the band’s only remaining original member by 2006. The addition of Johnny Jewel (of Glass Candy and Desire), Ruth Radelet’s hauntingly sultry lead vocals, and Nat Walker on percussion transformed Chromatics into a new lo-fi dark disco sound-hound. The future might hold more changes for this indecisive foursome, but their captivating live shows will always be worth attending.
