El-P

Brooklyn’s MC El-Producto (shortened to El-P) has been a dynamic force in the alternative hip-hop scene throughout the past decade. As a teenager, El-P (born Jaime Meline) formed the group Company Flow in the early ‘90s and went on to release a couple of albums. When a dispute with the trio’s record label arose, Meline parted ways and formed his own label called Definitive Jux featuring artists Dizzie Rascal and Aesop Rock. After going solo, trailblazer Meline released his first record under his new moniker in 2001 called Fantastic Damage and then the jazzy High Water, but it wasn’t until 2007 when he’d really break out with I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. Besides working on his own material, he’s also contributed to Mr. Lif and Atmosphere’s recordings (among others) while Def Jux has cemented its reputation as one of the premier labels in the history of indie hip-hop.
