Fiery Furnaces

Early comparisons of Brooklyn’s Fiery Furnaces to The White Stripes early on in their career almost seem quaint and strange now. The two duos continue to share the “brother-and-sister” dynamic, but the similarities don’t go much further than that. Since forming the band in early 2000, Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger have run the gamut of rock eccentricities, incorporating everything from Who-esque anthem rock, psychedelic pop, electronic experimentation and garage punk — sometimes all on the same record. They first gained serious attention with 2003’s Gallowsbird’s Bark and 2004’s Blueberry Boat, the latter of which became the blueprint of the duo’s uncompromising experimental sound. The Furnaces continued to experiment with 2005’s Rehearsing My Choir, an album-length spoken word collaboration with the Friedberger’s grandmother, and 2009’s Take Me Round Again — featuring Matthew and Eleanor covering each other’s songs solo.
