Foxy Shazam

Dirty guitar, glam sheen, and jaunty rhythms all describe Foxy Shazam, but there’s more to the band than that. They also exhibit innate pop sensibilities, getting their in-your-face attitude to somehow go down smooth as silk. Part Queen and part punk, this is an outfit unafraid to wear its influences on its sleeve. And they’re better for it. The songs are built like anthems with chords and choruses that will have fans singing along, filling a venue with cheers, stomping feet and pounding fists. It’s impossible to predict where the music will go from one song to the next. It could be disco. It could be gospel. Or straight-up rock and roll. Each genre is handled deftly and while the ironic winks abound, the songs come laced with just enough seriousness to keep the band from devolving into novelty act terrain. Their new album, The Church of Rock and Roll, was released in January. (Appearing with The Darkness at Metro on February 11) –text: Adrian Sobol
