Yelawolf

After a brush with reality TV fame as part of the failed “Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot”, some Columbia Records-sized major label tomfoolery and years of sweating it out with several DIY releases and collaborations, rural Alabaman rapper and skateboard enthusiast Yelawolf finally made his mark in 2011 with the official release of his debut studio album on Eminem’s famed Shady Records/Interscope. Entering the Billboard charts at number 27, Radioactive cemented Yelawolf’s style in the annals of American hip-hop — and the man is determined to stay on top of the game. Appearances by some of modern rap’s finest (Eminem, Kid Rock, Lil Jon, Mystical) on his debut album certainly helped Yela’s status as a true contender, but his heartfelt drive and determination to succeed have proven his most essential assets thus far. Stayed tuned for sophomore effort Love Story, set to drop in early 2013. (Friday, 5:30-6:30, North Stage) –text: Mike Scales

Yelawolf

As an aspiring rapper born and raised in the South, Yelawolf has always felt a deep connection with hip hop. His mixtape Trunk Muzik features smooth tempos with heavy basslines, and his single “Pop the Trunk” showcases a classic beat with raunchy lyrics. He was recently signed to Shady Records and was proclaimed as one of the “top eleven freshman” in 2011 by XXL magazine while being featured on the cover with Eminem. He’s collaborated with other big-name artists like Big Boi and Paul Wall, and also was featured on Missy Elliot’s Road to Stardom in 2005. Yela’s debut album Radioactive is set to be released this month and his first single “Gangsta Love” showcases quick lyrics with a Southern-styled swagger. Critics didn’t buy his image initially, but he has now solidified his place in hip hop. Yelawolf’s appearance on BET’s “Cypher” is a must-see, as he holds his own with some of the best. But just wait until you see the damage he can do on stage. (Appearing with DJ Craze at Bottom Lounge on October 20) –text: Callaya Haywood
