Yelawolf

After a brush with reality TV fame as part of the failed “Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot”, some Columbia Records-sized major label tomfoolery and years of sweating it out with several DIY releases and collaborations, rural Alabaman rapper and skateboard enthusiast Yelawolf finally made his mark in 2011 with the official release of his debut studio album on Eminem’s famed Shady Records/Interscope. Entering the Billboard charts at number 27, Radioactive cemented Yelawolf’s style in the annals of American hip-hop — and the man is determined to stay on top of the game. Appearances by some of modern rap’s finest (Eminem, Kid Rock, Lil Jon, Mystical) on his debut album certainly helped Yela’s status as a true contender, but his heartfelt drive and determination to succeed have proven his most essential assets thus far. Stayed tuned for sophomore effort Love Story, set to drop in early 2013. (Friday, 5:30-6:30, North Stage) –text: Mike Scales
