Veteran garage rock weirdoes The Black Lips are known for their outlandish antics which may or may not including urination, vomiting, and on-stage nudity. But a recent show with Ariel Pink may have taken the cake. “I do like the freaky weirdo scene,” Black Lips lead singer Cole Alexander says in a recent conversation with Chicago INNERVIEW. “We did a tour with Ariel Pink last year and I felt like he really captured the weirdo scene, and I really appreciated him letting us on tour with him. One of the best audience members we got was this guy who came up on stage and lit his pubic hair on fire. It was gnarly.”

Texas is home to armadillos, BBQ, 10-gallon hats and strangely enough, psychedelic rock. Over 10 years have passed since seminal Austin-based psych rockers The Black Angels released their first album, Passover, but this deliciously trippy band continues to crank out incredibly deep music filled with reverb, melody, and clairvoyant improvisational beauty. With a name derivative of the Velvet Underground track “The Black Angel’s Death Song,” the band’s newest and fifth LP Death Song is a tribute to a darkly obscure Native American tradition that feels strangely apropos in our apocalyptic political age. Chicago INNERVIEW spoke with lead singer/bassist Alex Maas on a sunny spring day to talk about the dark ideas behind Death Song.

North Coast Music Festival Announces 2017 Lineup

North Coast Music Festival, taking place in Chicago’s Union Park September 1-3, has announced its 2017 lineup. Friday acts include Deadmau5 & Eric Prydz, Gucci Mane, Bonobo, Lettuce, and Badbadnotgood. Saturday acts include Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, STS9, Big Boi, and Manic Focus. Sunday acts include Ween, The Cool Kids, Elephante, and Destructo. Five surprise acts, including a Sunday headliner, are to be announced in addition to a live graffiti area, silent disco, and house dome. Riot Fest Chicago Announces 2017 First Wave Lineup

Riot Fest Chicago, taking place September 15-17 in Douglas Park, has announced its first wave lineup to include headliners Nine Inch Nails (Friday), Queens of the Stone Age (Saturday), and Jawbreaker (Sunday). Additional acts include New Order, Paramore, Prophets of Rage, M.I.A., Wu-Tang Clan, Mike D (DJ Set), A Day To Remember, Gogol Bordello, Taking Back Sunday, Vic Mensa, Dirty Heads, TV on the Radio, Ministry, Dinosaur Jr., New Found Glory, Death From Above 1979, Bad Brains, FIDLAR, Action Bronson, Pennywise, Built to Spill, X, Peaches, The Lawrence Arms, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Orwells, Bayside, Say Anything, Mayday Parade, Streetlight Manifesto, Minus the Bear, The Menzingers, LIARS, GWAR, Buzzcocks, Hot Water Music, Shabazz Palaces, Andrew W.K., Fishbone, Saul Williams, and more, in addition to the Hellzapoppin’ Circus Sideshow Revue and 25+ more artists to be announced.
