Former solo project/current Nathan Williams-led band Wavves have a new tour in support of their most recent record, You’re Welcome. And from what we can tell from the title track and “Daisy,” the boys haven’t lost their touch. “Daisy” is a fun surf punk jaunt with playful riffs that checkmark the group’s well-established sardonic humor, while the title track begins with a violent noise rock static reminiscent of their earlier work before leading into a full-throated display of Williams’ lo-fi vocals. The sound is slightly less polished than their 2015 predecessor V, and it’s a most welcome return to form.

If you’re wondering just how prolific Ty Segall is, his new self-titled full-length isn’t even his first self-titled release (that honor goes to his 2008 Drag City debut). The tireless garage/punk/psych rock titan also released a new EP, Sentimental Goblin, in March on Suicide Squeeze Records. To call him busy is a seismic understatement, but perhaps the only thing more manic than his release schedule is his touring itinerary. Segall brings his revolving cast of musical misfits through Chicago on a near-constant basis, which is great news for fans of colossal shredding and wonderful garage punk weirdness.

THE ZOMBIES

It’s not crazy to mention The Zombies in the same breath as The Beach Boys or The Kinks. Maybe a missing link between starry-eyed ‘60s pop and Goth rock lives in Odessey & Oracle (misspelling intended), their last album before splitting up. In Odessey & Oracle, the saccharine fun of The Monkees or early Beatles mingles with something darker. Though its arrangements are simple, it still sounds startlingly ahead of its time. The album was so successful that even after The Zombies broke up, others posed as them and toured the United States to cash in on their success. (One of the groups, known by some as “The Texas Zombies,” contained future members of ZZ Top.) Thirty years after their heyday, The Zombies rose again in 1998 and are still kicking nearly two decades later. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear their groundbreaking sound in honor of Odessey & Oracle’s 50th anniversary.

THE MEAT PUPPETS

In their early days, The Meat Puppets were more interested in capturing the essences of Jack Kirby and surrealist artists like Francis Picabia than making music. Fronted by the Kirkwood brothers Curt and Cris, they’re maybe best known for their 15 minutes of fame courtesy of an appearance in Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged. But their crowning achievement is clearly Meat Puppets II, an album the Chili Peppers’ Flea once called “the warmest, coolest fucking record.” (Curt Kirkwood has gone on record saying that Meat Puppets II was “expressly intended to be recorded on acid.”) A grease fire of rockabilly and trailer park punk, they sound like patchouli smells, like peyote tastes, and like a dip in a lake of fire burns. Just right.
