PANAMA WEDDING

Panama Wedding’s music is so damn addictive it might as well be a proverbial can of earworms. (See what we did there?) Fronted by Peter Kirk, their most recent EP Into Focus boasts a collection of synth-pop ditties with subtle references to ‘80s pop in the music and hope in the lyrics, especially the daydream-sounding opening track “Infinite High.” It only makes sense that Panama Wedding, along with friends Great Good Fine Ok, recorded and released a cover of Phil Collins’ “Easy Lover,” giving the classic parent rock tune a majestic update. It also doesn’t hurt that the music video is absolutely adorable.

MURS

Rapper, father, husband, Instagrammer, gay rights activist, placer in the Guinness Book of World Records and all around cultural badass, Murs continues to attract attention with his raw, no-frills rap game. Coming from LA’s underground rap and hip hop scene, his lyricism and rap talent can be described in one word: real. With hair that could give The Weeknd a run for his money, Murs articulates lyrics that challenge the status quo and speak from the heart. Well aware of cultural, gender and racial divides in America, the rapper uses his art form to spread knowledge regarding these issues with charisma. Though some call his rap political, he has the ability to reach the masses with his pertinent thoughts that we all need to be thinking.

MASTODON

Hailed by critics as one of the most preeminent metal acts of the early 21st century, Mastodon has had just about every sub-genre listed before the word “metal” when describing them — from progressive metal to sludge metal to alternative metal to experimental metal to groove metal. Call them whatever you wish, but the band themselves have stated that they find the metal label a bit too restrictive, and their appreciation for all styles of music incorporate itself into their music. Also noted for their lyrics, the band released Leviathan in 2004, a concept album centered around the famous novel Moby-Dick. New album Emperor of Sand also revolves around a concept: a desert wanderer who has been handed down a death sentence. With a steady number of albums all receiving critical acclaim, one can be certain that Mastodon will not be receiving a death sentence of their own anytime soon.

MAC DEMARCO

Canadian singer/songwriter Mac DeMarco has been adopted as the patron saint of art school stoners, but his deadpan poetry is too slippery for easy classification. DeMarco first established himself in Vancouver’s music scene under the moniker Makeout Videotape. After a successful international tour, DeMarco released the album-length EP Rock and Roll Night Club in 2012 under his own name. From there, his subsequent studio albums — 2012’s 2, 2014’s Salad Days, and 2015’s Another One — saw the ubiquitous usage of descriptive terms such as “slacker rock,” “guitar pop” and even DeMarco’s self-described genre of “jizz jazz.” The only consistent is DeMarco’s continuous creep towards poignant observations laced with his laconic, lazy instrumentals.
