Kehlani’s been on everybody’s radar for a while, dropping mixtapes and high-profile collaborations with Chicago’s Chance the Rapper and BJ The Chicago Kid. She released her debut album SweetSexySavage filled with songs concerning love, trying to find Mr. Right (Now), and speaking on her own work ethic such as in “CRZY.” She’s fought her way through homelessness and depression to release a stellar work of pop soul, not counting contributions to the soundtracks for Suicide Squad and the latest Fast and Furious installment. She warns us we should be worried on “Do U Dirty,” but the only thing we’re worried about is her show selling out.

JONATHAN RICHMAN

Like all mad geniuses, Jonathan Richman’s foray into the music business was mired. Completely awed by the sound of The Velvet Underground, Richman moved from Boston to New York after graduating high school, living for a time on Velvet’s manager Steve Sesnick’s couch. After a nine-month stint which led nowhere, Richman retreated back to Boston and formed the seminal ‘70s underground art-rock group The Modern Lovers — who disbanded after releasing their sole but seminal eponymous album. Richman has since soldiered on solo, acquiring a loyal crowd of listeners who continue to swoon to his arcane acoustic farce pop.

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

As one of the most brilliantly masked pop bands in modern times, The Jesus and Mary Chain have maintained a healthy level of respect within the music community over the past three decades by creating a sound that combines masterful pop hooks with the stoned fuzzed-out grunge that was made popular in the underground music of the ’80s and early ‘90s. The presence of “Just Like Honey” at the end of the film Lost In Translation inspired the two brothers to play music again after a long hiatus, culminating in the recent release of their first new album in almost two decades, Damage & Joy. Even better news? It’s being supported by this long-awaited reunion gig from one of the most influential bands of the modern era (and perhaps the most name-checked rock group in all of music journalism.)

HIPPO CAMPUS

Although they’ve only released 2 EPs since their short 4-year period as a band, Hippo Campus has lit up the hypothalamus portion of our brain from which they derive their name by employing energy-charged guitar riffs and upbeat vocal melodies in an all-out assault on the cerebral cortex. With a unique indie rock sound that seems to bring one back in time, their tunes will definitely make you want to dance or, at the very least, bob your head along. After being chosen to perform at Minnesota music festival Rock The Garden in 2016, Hippo Campus has kept the momentum going into 2017 with their debut full-length Landmark.
