One thing you can say about the mercurial Mike Hadreas, a.k.a. Perfume Genius: He loves his sequin shirts. Looking like a modern David Bowie, what could be expected from a person who plays a piano while seemingly slipping into a hypnotic state of mind? It’s weird, it’s ambient, and it’s definitely not something you’d hear on a top 40 radio station. What matters is that it’s intriguing music that people who get it enjoy hearing. After the mega success of the 2014 song “Queen,” Hadreas has since been a success at Pitchfork Music Festival and other such tastemaking affairs.
