BY SAMANTHA LOPEZ
A vital species in the pop-punk epidemic that infected the indie rock scene in the mid-to-early-2000s, Joyce Manor are still one of the most relevant acts in the genre today. The California-based band typically combines fast punk tempos, power chord changes and loud distorted guitar wah-wahs with pop-influenced melodies and lyrical themes. Together since 2008, they note their early influences to be acts like early Weezer and Guided By Voices, which is apparent in their discography with their equally easy-to-digest themes and catchy hooks exploring a pseudo-rebellion that was so prominent with the rise of strip malls and skate parks becoming places of refuge in the early 2000s. Joyce Manor gave a common reference point to all the “weirdoes” of the time and serve as a solid place of nostalgia for their fans now in their 30s.
