WACO BROTHERS

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Steeped in classic Americana set besides raging punk, the Waco Brothers effortlessly cement the two genres into gritty political music while keeping the fun very much in tact. Having roots in Chicago, Britain and Austin, the erstwhile five-piece band has been making incisive statements that ricochet off noisy guitar since their genesis 20 years ago. Lead man Jon Langford’s voice and energy grips the foundation of alt-country and punchy punk rock, lending the band a genuine substance that’s inspired generations of bands after them. With their ability to showcase humor and thoughtfulness in both the personal and political, Waco Brothers occupy a truly unique and much-needed space in today’s musical landscape.

TORTOISE

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Chicago’s legendary post-rock jazz icons Tortoise continue to grace us with difficult to describe labile tracks. Since the five-piece band’s formation in the early ‘90s, they have delivered a ridiculous amount of superb instrumentation from each band member. It has always been a challenge to know exactly which member is giving us which sound, making for always mysterious and interesting live shows. The progression of each track is different, encompassing ambient minimalism and electric guitar-laden noise. No strangers to experimentation, Tortoise has never been slow to epitomize how modern music should be experienced.

TORCHE

BY ERIKA KRISTEN

And now…the award for “one of the best underrated sludge metal bands of the past decade” goes to…Miami’s Torche. As trippy as metal can get, Torche has mastered the fine art of incorporating catchy U2-like hooks and airy Jane’s Addiction-style vocals into a blistering sound. Every simple driving beat exposes another unchartered layer to the music, delivering a very specific sound that is all their own. Each album clocks in at a hair over 30 minutes, best heard in rapid succession as true grit can be heard in unequivocal crowd pleasers like “Annihilation Affair” and “In Pieces.”

THE WHITE PANDA

BY AMANDA SANCHEZ

The White Panda was started by two childhood friends who decided to pursue a career in electronic dance music in college. Proving that procrastination isn’t all bad, they worked on their music while trying to avoid their schoolwork and the gambit paid off as their first single ended up topping the internet radio charts in 2009. Since then, The White Panda has produced five full-length albums and 32 number one singles on Hype Machine. In 2011, just two years after their start, The White Panda was one of SoundCloud’s top five most-streamed artists. But their live show is clearly where they make their money. Come see why.
