TOVE LO

BY LISA MROCK

The Princess of Sad Pop is making her triumphant return to Chicago to mend some post-Valentine’s Day hearts. Considering she recently owned the stage at KISS FM’s Jingle Ball, it seems a pretty safe bet that she’ll dominate the House of Blues with songs from her latest album Lady Wood. Such songs include “Cool Girl,” “True Disaster,” and what will hopefully be her next single “Don’t Talk About It,” a playful anthem of secret affairs and hookups backed by slick production and Lo’s signature poetically blunt lyrics. Her latest songs are significantly moodier and more submerged than the dramatic “Habits (Stay High)” and fiery “Talking Body,” but they’re still as tantric as ever.

TITLE FIGHT

BY ERIN MALYSA

With their guitar-driven sound and anxious hardcore vocals, Title Fight serve as a throwback to the early days of all of our emo and post-hardcore phases of Warped Tour and too much Mountain Dew. Formed in 2003 in Pennsylvania, the group initially started as a trio consisting of Jamie Robinson on guitar and vocals and twin brothers Ned and Ben Russin on bass and drums, but in expanding their sound they eventually added Shane Moran on guitar. With a name like Title Fight, one instantly thinks of the essential hardcore punk sounds held together with blood and sweat. However in their latest album Hyperview, the band explores a new style, playing with an ambient sound and turning their prolonged aggression into a more refined and lush alt-gaze sound.

THE LUMINEERS

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Invoking the deep Americana sounds of Midwest rock, gospel, and folk, The Lumineers prove tradition (and foot-stomping, frenzied-strumming sets) is more than enough to rouse a crowd or command a stadium. Coping with the sorrow of his 19-year-old brother’s drug overdose, Jeremiah Fraites formed the band in 2002. Joined by guitarist/lead vocalist Wesley Schultz and cellist Neyla Pekarek following relocation from New York to Denver, they released two EPs before their self-titled album debuted to much critical acclaim in 2012. The album, led by the omnipresent single “Hey Ho,” went double platinum and cemented their place as major players in the contemporary folk landscape.

THE HOTELIER

BY LISA MROCK

The Northeast has been a recent hotspot for punk and hardcore-influenced acts, ranging from The Wonder Years to The Menzingers to Title Fight. And, even more recently, it’s brought us The Hotelier. Hailing from Worcester, Mass., they gained notoriety with their second album Home, Like Noplace Is There despite initially being clustered in with the “emo revival.” Their third album Goodness, released earlier this year, shows off the potency of their lyrics while tracks like “Piano Player” and “Sun” prove they haven’t lost their touch for fun.
