Yet another treat from Chicago’s bountiful hip hop scene is Saba, born Tahj Malik Chandler and hailing from the West Side. Earlier in 2016, he gave us one of the best hip hop releases of the year with Bucket List Project. The opening track “In Loving Memory” begins with the start of an ignition, taking us on a smooth drive of hooks and jaunts crafted so well he makes it seem easy. On “Westside Bound 3″, he speaks of growing up in a “a part of the city that they don’t be talking about” and of watching himself and his friends go down starkly separate paths.

RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE

People want to be charmed. Go to any concert and if the band is humble and sincere, you feel it and then a magical thing happens…everyone is emotionally moved and cheer louder as the energy cycles through the band and back into the crowd. This band from Boone, North Carolina shines brightly on their 2015 release, RKS. Raging into 2017 on tour by selling out shows in New York, they even have a song on this album entitled “Goodnight Chicago,” which is endearing if you live in our wonderful and absolutely frigid city. So let RKS warm you up and charm the pants off of you in the deepest of winter. But if for some reason you miss the show, this is definitely a band you’ll hear soon on XRT.

PUBLIC ACCESS T.V.

Formed in New York City in 2014, new wave rock group Public Access T.V. were no strangers to fantastic reviews from day one. Their debut track “Monaco” was immediately welcomed with heated acclaim, unsurprisingly earning them praise from the perennial fanboys at NME who breathlessly declared them “New York’s Hottest New Band” (until the next new “hottest band” emerged, probably a few pages later). But it didn’t seem to do them any harm, as “Monaco” was released in January of 2014 and later that month their first live show was already sold out. After supporting acts like Weezer and The Strokes, their debut album came out in September of 2016 and (surprise, surprise) received positive reviews from the still-fawning blogosphere. They must be doing something right, right?

PSALM ONE

What might be most refreshing about underground music scenes is that women are coming up strong and showing the majority culture that female voices in art and music are still needed. Chicago’s underground hip hop scene has been blessed, graced and pleased with the insurgence of veteran female rapper Psalm One. The wise lyricist interweaves crisp rap with poetic anthems that speak out on topics from the gross injustice in the world to how ridiculous Twitter can get. Psalm One has been a voice for newer generations who want to live a better life and, after 10 years in the industry, she’s coming up stronger than ever with fierce passion and undying loyalty to her art.
