PRIESTS
BY WILLIAM LENNON
The lyrics of Washington D.C.’s Priests feel like strings of revolutionary code words masquerading as free verse poetry. Lead singer Katie Alice Greer makes Harley Quinn look like Jackie Kennedy and with her at the helm, the band’s live shows demonstrate a visceral resonance that’s prone to spasms of nihilism set amidst shudders of disgust. D.C. is, of course, a Mecca for hardcore, but Priests isn’t anyone’s sequel. They’re too agitated to settle into a spot in the canon and too manic for militancy. Their new album Nothing Feels Natural is technically their first (the much-loved Bodies and Control and Money and Power is an EP), but it’s also a new classic in the form of 17 minutes of writhing razor wire.
