THUNDERCAT

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Described as “the creative epicenter” of Kendrick Lamar’s contemporary classic To Pimp a Butterfly, a steady collaborator with Flying Lotus, and a contributor to cutting-edge neo soul albums, multi-genre threat Thundercat has emerged as a major player in today’s jazz fusion landscape. Born Stephen Bruner to a family of accomplished musicians, his first noteworthy gig was as the new bassist for his older brother’s famous L.A.-based band, Suicidal Tendencies. Often the first choice bassist for artists such as Sa-Ra and Erykah Badu, 2011 saw the debut of his first solo studio LP The Golden Age of Apocalypse followed by 2013’s Apocalypse. Looks like the end of the world has found a fitting soundtrack.

THE RADIO DEPARTMENT

BY JAMIE ROBASH

The fact that Swedish indie pop outfit The Radio Department are still a band today is largely due to nothing more than singer/co-founder Johan Duncanson’s sheer will to persevere. Duncanson formed the group in ’95 with Elin Almered while the pair were still in high school. Almered quit shortly afterwards but Duncanson assembled a new cast of characters in ’01 and has since steadily built a solid following at home and in the States with a smattering of infectious dream pop offerings ranging from 2010’s seminal Clinging to a Scheme to the recent masterpiece Running Out of Love.

THE ORWELLS

BY LISA MROCK

Local band/critical darlings/David Letterman favorites The Orwells have outdone themselves yet again with Terrible Human Beings. The rising garage rock group’s third album packs a snarky punch with “Black Francis,” where every other line in its verses are sung in a high-pitched mocking tone. When asked, “Have you heard that band?”, the mocking voice responds, “Yeah I think they’re shit.” Meanwhile, “They Put a Body In the Bayou” is yet another bluntly told story involving a smack here and a snort there. The only thing that beats listening to their new album is hearing it live. And maybe sorting something while you’re at it.

THE MENZINGERS

BY Mike Milazzo

Coming off 2012 with many critics including their album On the Impossible Past on that year’s “best-of” lists, you can say it’s been a good run for The Menzingers. Similar accolades were given to their 2014 release Rented World before the band spent most of 2015 touring throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. With such a hectic past few years (and a wide amount of success to go with it), it only seems fitting that their 2017 release is titled After the Party. The title seems to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the band has received a lot of hype these past few years, and many may be left wondering if such a high level of acclaim can be maintained. Naysayers be warned: one listen to the new album’s title track is more than enough to squash any doubts.
