THE KNOCKS

BY ANGIE MARTIN

If the music of NYC duo The Knocks were described as a child during a parent-teacher conference, it would go something like this. The Knocks presents well with an excited mood and broad affect. They fully participate in life and live shows. Their music is concise, fun, dreamy and gets the party going. With New York roots and a think-outside-the-box attitude, each track articulates a different realm of life. The Knocks get people dancing with their innate ability to drop beats that connect to the mind and body. In short, The Knocks are excellent students. They just have a little trouble focusing.

THE JUAN MACLEAN

BY ANGIE MARTIN

John (a.k.a. “Juan”) Maclean is an authority in mixing electronic soundscapes. Since 2002, he has delivered tracks that are ethereal and atmospheric, challenging the notion that electronic music is sliced, noisy and heavy. Often collaborating with female vocalists, his songs showcase a dreamy quality that quietly builds into something worth dancing to. He masterfully loops bass, drum and vocals into complex mixes that over the years have garnered a devoted if not massive fan base. Juan Maclean is able to give each track its own sonically unique personality while sticking to his goal of creating unadulterated electronic perfection.

THE JOY FORMIDABLE

BY ERIN MALYSA

Welsh trio The Joy Formidable embarks on a new journey with their 2016 album, Hitch. Their third album travels a well-worn path into the deep forest haze of the dreamy alt-pop band’s organic musical arsenal. From the opening track “A Second in White” to concluding track “The Last Thing on My Mind (Radio Edit),” the guitars hum as the vocals search for the way back through a clearing in the woods that turns out to be the way forward. The tour is being deemed “An Acoustic Evening with The Joy Formidable” so, like their sound, it’s bound to be up-close and personal.

STRAND OF OAKS

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Timothy Showalter plays music under the moniker Strand of Oaks. Hailing from Indiana, the moody rocker makes music that reflects some of the more tragic aspects of life. Themes of his albums include remembering his angsty teenage years, healing from lost love, experiencing intense self-doubt and feeling agony day after day. Though the themes are deep, the bigger picture he illuminates is that of hope. He owns an authenticity and attitude that dictates that while sometimes life is rough, in the end you will be okay. He delivers his message with a substantial dose of guitar to remind us that rock ‘n’ roll is as strong and sturdy as, yes, a strand of oaks.
