SPRINGTIME CARNIVORE

Born and raised just outside of Chicago, Greta Morgan has created music from a young age, starting her professional career in Chicago band The Hush Sound. Now engaged in a solo project called Springtime Carnivore, the standout singer/songwriter makes dialectical music that can be either lighthearted and fun or ominous and sad. Layering multiple instruments with textured vocals and lyrics with sustenance, experiencing her music could be akin to walking through the numerous colors of the rainbow to bask in the beauty that beholds after a cold, hard rain.

SLEIGH BELLS

If you assumed a band called Sleigh Bells would include actual sleigh bells in their music, we’re sorry to disappoint. Otherwise, behold their fourth album Jessica Rabbit, an album that continues the journey of Derek Miller’s sharp, jagged guitar riffs juxtaposed with the sweet, marshmallow-light voice of Alexis Krauss. Each song is a mish-mash of pace, emotion, and style. Just look at “Throw Me Down the Stairs”, a ravenous song with varying speeds and then smack dab in the middle, it goes from noise rock to ballad pop with an added key change. There are twists, there are turns, and they keep you interested for the long haul.

RUN THE JEWELS

Killer Mike spent his summer essentially campaigning as the Vice President for Bernie Sanders. Once that dream was dashed, Killer Mike reunited with his longtime running mate El-P to work on some new legislation: Run The Jewels 3. RTJ3 is their third studio album (fourth if you count their feline-themed Meow The Jewels), and it’s their best album yet. Killer Mike and El-P showcase the confidence and cohesion that forms after three years working together on an album of tightly wound bangers. The beats have never sounded better from El-P, and the political fire from Killer Mike has never been more essential.

RICHARD ASHCROFT

Anyone who was awake in the late-‘90s likely remembers Richard Ashcroft as the tall and gangly frontman of English psych-pop group The Verve who, despite two solid prior records, were finally able to break into the mainstream riding the second wave of the British invasion with their smash hit “Bittersweet Symphony” from their now-classic record Urban Hymns. Ironically, the band’s success was bittersweet and problematic, plagued by lawsuits and drug use until they disbanded just a year later. Ever since, Ashcroft has found his way solo and last year quietly released his fifth record, These People.
