PALLBEARER

BY ERIKA KRISTEN

Pallbearer, the little band that could from Little Rock, Arkansas, will begin an extensive touring schedule this spring for their highly anticipated third album, Heatless. And if this release is anything like their previous album drops, be prepared for a whirlwind of reflective emotions that will have you and the crowd of devoted neck-beards nodding in unison. Pallbearer is notorious for their epically long sonatas such as “Foreigner” and “The Ghost I Used to Be”, to name a few. Though they will take you through the arch of their melodic brand of doom since their conception, they do produce some of the best acheful songs that longing metal has to offer.

NOUVELLE VAGUE

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Nouvelle Vague means “new wave” in French. That makes it quite fitting that the French duo cover ‘70s and ‘80s new wave tracks that are now well-known classics. Since all of their tracks feature soft female vocalists, one might be confused to know the band is comprised of two males. Half of Nouvelle Vague (Marc Collins) is known for his innate capacity to find the finest female vocalists and include them in the band’s various covers. Each cover is a stripped-down version of its original, highlighting acoustic and classical guitar, percussion and the band’s own brainy integration of jazz. The tracks definitely deliver a different attitude than expected, as if the female voice is reinterpreting the entire track. The beauty of Nouvelle Vague is they are paying homage to the original song makers while allowing new listeners to uncover the hits of former generations.

MØ

BY ERIKA KRISTEN

Mø (try it with me, pronounced closer to “MOO”) has an impressive compilation of smash-ups with leading EDM acts from around the world assembled during a fairly short career span. Karen Marie Ørsted hasn’t been spoiled by the woes of adulthood, as her latest a cappella song “Drum” reflects. This Scandihoovian maiden embodies what it is to be young and carefree and we get to experience this joy in each and every track, with the hugely popular “Lean On” by Major Lazar and DJ Snake still in heavy rotation years after its release. At this point, just give into the trance. You might like it.

LUCY DACUS

BY KAREN HEERINGA

Lucy Dacus made a music video for her song “I Don’t Want To Be Funny Anymore” and within hours, she had record labels and executives from all walks of life clamoring for her to sign with them. From recording the album to signing with Matador, only six months had past. Her band plays dark garage tones sung by what sounds like a finishing school graduate from the 1960s. It may all sound proper and pretty at first glance, but if you peeked under her mattress you might find a pack of unfiltered cigarettes and a dirty old biker magazine.
