LOS CAMPESINOS!

BY LISA MROCK

How in the hell does a Welsh indie group get the name Los Campesinos!? Eh, why bother ruminating on this when they have new tracks out? With new album Sick Scenes soon to be on the scene, everyone has time to memorize the lyrics before their show at Metro. The first single, “I Broke Up in Amarante,” is the finest form of pop rock with fun wordplay and a touch of angst, with the lyrics “it seems unfair” sung repeatedly throughout. The LP’s second single “5 Flucloxacillin” deals with infections of different kinds over soft “oooohs” in the background and offers a sense of calmness in the face of emotional calamity.

LAURA JANE GRACE

BY RYAN BRAY

Since coming into her own as Laura Jane Grace almost five years ago, the Against Me! frontwoman formerly known as Tom Gabel has transcended music to become a modern-day transgender hero. In November, Grace released Tranny, an unflinching memoir detailing not only her band’s rise to stardom but also her own struggles with gender dysphoria that she braved to become the woman she is today. The book highlights Grace’s ability to get deep and personal, and her sold-out City Winery show seems to promise the same sort of acoustic intimacy.

JENS LEKMAN

BY JAMIE ROBASH

This Swedish troubadour’s rise to glory is the stuff of indie pop lore. Legend has it that Lekman came upon music at the age of 14 after being asked to play bass in a friend’s band. Within a few weeks, he was writing original compositions. A year later, American indie stalwart Sufjan Stevens’ Secretly Canadian label released his critically acclaimed debut When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog in ‘04. However, it was 2007’s Night Falls Over Kortedala that really brought Lekman into the collective indie consciousness. Teasers for his latest opus, Life Will See You Now, are keeping the magic alive.

GALACTIC

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Galactic is a jazz and funk band formed 20 years ago in New Orleans. But that’s about as boring a way possible to describe their electrifying sound. The six-piece continues to draw inspiration from the colorful city that still defines them and while their music has little boundaries, it remains endlessly true to its Crescent City roots. Collaborating with musicians from across the globe, they are known to integrate R&B, gospel, blues, rap and, most famously, funk into their epic party tracks. At live shows, they are known to bring in some of the best-known New Orleans jazz musicians take part in the fun. Humble in their outward demeanor but burning with inner passion, they spark a creative energy that lights a fire to any venue they touch.
