WAXAHATCHEE

BY JAMIE ROBASH

Alabama-born indie prodigy Katie Crutchfield was already a staple in the southern DIY scene by the age of 15 along with her twin sister Allison, who were then known for their scrappy punk experiment P.S. Eliot. After its dissolution, Crutchfield trickled through various other short-lived DIY projects before releasing American Weekend, her sparse, folksy solo debut under the moniker Waxahatchee in 2012. Her next effort, Cerulean Salt, hit the mark with critics and attracted the attention of maverick indie label Merge Records, who have since released 2015’s epic melancholic masterpiece Ivy Tripp. While this Metro show has Crutchfield warming up the crowd for The New Pornographers, she’ll be headlining this stage in no time.

TYCHO

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Tycho’s downtempo ambient soundscapes are emotionally vast, sonically dynamic and spiritually vigorous. Sacramento, California-born musician Scott Hansen blends analogue and digital structures that capture modern human dwelling and our own attempt to live with both. On soul-tingling album tracks, simple synthesizers envelop layers of guitars, bass and percussions. Live shows are backed by a full band that include astonishing visuals and feel as if there’s a mystical path being set under foot. Tycho’s ability to join emotional and physical elements lends itself to something that is both healing and freeing. It’s not surprising that this talented gentleman was up for a Grammy this year for “Best Dance/Electronic Album”, as he knows how to move people in all aspects of their being.

TORO Y MOI

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Though often typecast as a champion of the 2010 chillwave movement, Chazwick Bundick creates and produces music that more flits between electronic genres as Toro y Moi. The experimental soundscapes of his first studio LP, Causers of Time, was crafted on digital workstation Reason and helped distinguish him with indie rock audiences (as did his now-signature clear glasses.) The year after that saw the release of the LP Underneath the Pine and the EP Freaking Out. 2013’s Anything in Return heralded his most infectious arrangements, with highlights “Say That” and “Grown Up Calls” receiving wide radio play. What For?, Bundick’s fourth studio album released in April 2015, even cracked the Billboard 200.
