TIMBER TIMBRE

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Haunting, bluesy, and always beautiful, Canadian indie folk group Timber Timbre have become fixtures on the festival circuit. With a name inspired by the Ontario cabin that formed the base camp for many of their early recordings, they independently released Cedar Shakes in 2006 with Medicinals following the year after. The quiet, winding mood of the cabin’s woods permeates both records, carried by the lingering vocals of multi-instrumentalist Taylor Kirk. Their first studio self-titled album was shortlisted for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize, while 2011’s Creep On Creepin’ On and 2013’s Hot Dreams received similarly well-deserved praise.

THE WEDDING PRESENT

BY JAMIE ROBASH

By ’86 after little less than a year as a band, Leeds, England’s The Wedding Present recorded their first session with the iconic BBC radio host John Peel. The following year saw the release of their astounding debut LP George Best, which earned the band critical acclaim both for its tumultuous guitar pop sound as well as David Gedge’s gutturally lovelorn lyrics. Despite the remarkable Steve Albini-produced Bizarro in ‘89 and ‘91s Seamonsters, Gedge soon looked up and found himself to be the only remaining band member by ’94. Since ’02, Gedge has been writing and releasing material under the Wedding Present name, most recently 2016’s Going, Going…

THE TOSSERS

BY LISA MROCK

The Tossers, self-proclaimed as “The World’s Loudest Folk Band,” are making their way up from the far South Side of Chicago to the North Side to play Metro this St. Patrick’s Day. Watch these South Side Irish folks tear through the latest songs off their new album Smash the Windows, released from Chicago’s very own Victory Records. The mixing of traditional Celtic and Irish themes with more contemporary raging punk is all too irresistible, as demonstrated on songs like “Erin Go Bragh,” a fast-paced green beer-chugging jaunt that’ll make everyone in Chicago believe they’re Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Not that they don’t pretend to be anyway.

THE REVIVALISTS

BY LISA MROCK

Ingesting good rock music is a lot like eating a good ass slice of pie, with insides sweet enough to make the teeth chatter under a deliciously savory exterior. That’s just what The Revivalists’ album Men Amongst Mountains is like to listen to. The seven-piece New Orleans outfit blesses us with soulful vocals, notably in “Wish I Knew You,” layered atop a tasty vibe that’s equal parts dreamy and funky. (Is “dream-funk” a thing?) “King of What” has its flavors rooted in Americana before we’re taken back to church for dessert with “Move On”, a soulfully satisfying track about taking a love that is known to be deserved.
