SON VOLT

Son Volt would be best described as country, but after watching the weird funk/country collaboration of country megastars Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban at The Grammys for their song “The Fighter,” perhaps bluegrass would be a more accurate description. Son Volt make catchy, layered and, most importantly, pleasant country/bluegrass music that’s more Bob Dylan than Toby Keith. After a short hiatus from Son Volt for a solo project, lead singer Jay Farrar returned to the band around 2007. The band recently released their eighth studio album, Notes of Blue, and it’s considered to be their finest album yet.

With an inscrutably angelic pitch to his voice — one that’s so convincingly feminine you may be surprised to learn Christopher Michael Taylor’s gender after listening to a SOHN album — the dynamic musician based in Vienna debuted his first album, Tremors, in 2014. Since the beginning of his enigmatic trajectory, he’s delivered such whimsical, electronic melds like “The Wheel” and “Bloodflows,” following suit with a discography that could easily serve as a soundtrack for an emotive video game. (Perhaps a new age Zelda with enviable beats?) His latest installment, Silhouettes, takes things to another level of musical genius.

REGINA SPEKTOR

In Soviet-era Russia, you didn’t make music. Music made you. Lucky for us, they made a musical gem in the form of Regina Spektor. Born in the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War, Spektor moved to New York with her family at the age of nine, where she received classical training as a pianist and began writing her own material. Signed to Sire Records in 2004, her fourth album Begin To Hope spawned several singles (most notably “Samson”) and was certified Gold. Her newest album, 2016’s Remember Us to Life, displays more of a pop influence than previous albums. But, luckily for us as we seem to be creeping towards a new Cold War with Russia, it’s still prime Spektor.

PHANTOGRAM

Just a few months after a successful show at the Aragon as part of WKQX’s “Nights We Stole Christmas”, Phantogram are coming back to Uptown yet again…this time at the Riv. The dreamily cinematic synth pop impresarios’ most recent album Three is (cruelly) only 10 songs, but let’s cross our fingers for a deluxe edition with at least three more tracks. Don’t get us wrong, we love the dystopian alternative sound of “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” and the darkly hypnotic “Run Run Blood,” but only 10 songs? Though to be fair, better to have just 10 great songs instead of five okay songs on top of that. That’s the way Phantogram works, as only the best rises to the top.
