PASSENGER

BY AMANDA SANCHEZ

Michael David Rosenberg, better known as Passenger, is a solo singer/songwriter from England. (Previously fronting his band Passenger, Rosenberg decided to keep Passenger as his stage name when the band broke up in 2009.) His debut solo album, Wide Eyes Blind Love, was released in 2009 while his third album, All the Little Lights, features his most well known hit “Let Her Go.” Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea is Passenger’s most recent album and was well received by fans eager for another dose of his quietly melancholic yet beautifully cinematic sound. He’s toured with good friend Ed Sheeran multiple times, no doubt helping Rosenberg earn more deserved fame.

NIKKI LANE

By Mike Milazzo

Bringing her unique blend of rebel country and classic rock and roll in a stunning package of blue eyes and black hair, the self-proclaimed “First Lady of Outlaw Country” is poised and ready to set the city ablaze. Nikki Lane’s newest album All Or Nothin’, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, has received critical acclaim and brought many comparisons to the original outlaw of country Loretta Lynn. One listen to the angry growl of her vocals in “Love’s on Fire”, a duet with Auerbach, is sure to demonstrate why she’s set to take over the title.

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

BY SAMANTHA LOPEZ

With nearly 20 years under their belts, there’s no denying the influence of The New Pornographers. The band’s discography has enabled them to become one of the most notable indie acts of this generation. The band’s first four albums each placed in the top 40 on The Village Voice’s Pazz and Jop year-end amalgamation of hundreds of music reviewers and, from 2000-2006, either a New Pornographers album or a solo album from one of the band’s many members cracked the list. In addition to critical acclaim, the band has mastered the simplicity of poppy indie rock by mixing strong melodies with clear and crisp vocal harmonies and prominent guitar riffs to create an affable sound easy to listen to yet hard to find fault with.

MOON DUO

BY LISA MROCK

Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have taken a turn for the otherworldly in the first part of Moon Duo’s two-part opus, Occult Architecture. Enlisting the inspirations of magic and mythology within their expansive psychedelic sound, they mix it all together with synthesizers to create a deliciously creepy sonic adventure. Opening track “The Death Set” has a hazy, spacey vibe to it, whereas “Creepin’” shies away from sounding too far out there with a faster, more immediate sound. “Will of the Devil” makes you feel like you’re in a situation to be determined by greater forces out of your control, while “White Rose” leaves you wide-eyed and hungry for more.
