MINUS THE BEAR

By Mike Milazzo

No, that’s not Zach Galifianakis up on stage holding a Les Paul…although one could certainly see how Minus The Bear vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider could be mistaken for the portly bearded comedian. The similarities end there, however, as Snider delivers strong vocals and riffs to front these erstwhile indie rockers from Seattle. With songs that range between the ballad-esque sound of “Pachuca Sunrise” to the dance-worthy vibes of “My Time” to the more experimental rock sound of their latest album VOIDS, Minus The Bear continue to prove to the music world that Seattle has much more to offer than Starbucks-branded folk music.

LITTLE HURRICANE

BY SAMANTHA LOPEZ

Consisting of frontman Anthony “Tone” Catalano and drummer Celeste “C.C.” Spina, there’s no denying that Little Hurricane are picking up right where The White Stripes left off. The San Diego-based duo creates a minimalist blues sound within the classic aesthetic of an indie rock band. The duo met after Spina put an advertisement on Craigslist looking for like-minded musicians, and Catalano caught her attention when he mentioned his jazz-band high school days. The band’s bluesy style stems from both Santa Cruz (where Catalano was educated) and Chicago, where Spina associated learning her “breaking beats.” Together, they form a fierce tornado (or some might say, hurricane) of sound.

LAMBCHOP

BY ANGIE MARTIN

Alt-country veterans Lambchop continue to pay homage to traditional country music while integrating more jagged elements of post-rock to create their own avant-garde brand. The Nashville-based grand band shows their true brilliance onstage, where frontman Kurt Wagner leads the numerous members into comforting yet infectious music for the crowd to move to. With multiple instruments and personalities on stage, each track veers from one genre to the next in a no-frills musical frenzy that feels natural yet is somehow incredibly organized. Wagner’s astonishing stage presence, backed by his absurdly talented musical peers, never fails to deliver a surprisingly radiant energy.

KING GIZZARD & LIZARD WIZARD

BY JAMIE ROBASH

This Aussie septet of psychedelic Svengalis began playing rudimentary ‘60s-styled acid rock in 2011. And ever since then, they’ve been releasing records at a remarkable pace. The rapid-fire release cycle began with their 2012 debut 12 Bar Bruise, which they followed up five months later with Eyes Like the Sky and Float Along, Fill Your Lungs following shortly after. In the following years, the releases slowed slightly and became more tightly knit experiments focusing more on a heavier sound. These efforts have borne fruit with their most focused and truly experimental work to date, last year’s Nonagon Infinity, which garnered the band comparisons to legendary rock weirdo Frank Zappa.
