HA HA TONKA

Even if they don’t look it for every second of their existence, these dudes have long hair and plaid shirts deep inside their souls. Just because you’d never heard them before doesn’t mean you haven’t heard them. If you’ve enjoyed listening to fellow Bloodshot Records bands like The Waco Brothers or can imagine a modern and cooler version of John Cougar Mellencamp, then Ha Ha Tonka (named after a rural Missouri state park) is your band. It’s good feelings on a Saturday morning in September, a cold beer around the campfire, and walking along train tracks with your best girl. Everything is real and happy, and life is good on the weekends.

GENERATIONALS

When The Eames Era disbanded in 2008, guitarists Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer decided to band together and form Generationals. The name derived from how every issue seemed to be a generational issue on CNN’s coverage of the 2008 presidential election. This is ironic since most of this New Orleans duo’s music is more feel-good and whimsical than heavy and political. Think Passion Pit meets Tame Impala, melding synth beats with psychedelic rock and harmonic distorted vocals. Their newest song “Turning the Screw” showcases what the duo does best, which is start the party (or keep it from dying down) with new wave beats and dreamy vocals. For fans of Tennis and STRFKR.

FRUIT BATS

Throughout Eric D. Johnson’s many years working on his delicately beautiful indie rock project Fruit Bats, he’s also taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music, been a part of The Shins and Califone, and scored films like Our Idiot Brother. We can’t help showing a little favoritism toward local artists, but the praise flows effortlessly when it comes to Fruit Bats’ latest album Absolute Loser. “My Sweet Midwest” strikes all the right chords, while the title track offers the perfect tinge of nostalgia. There’s a delightful essence of Americana with a kind and uplifting sound that will stick with you longer after he’s left the stage.

FLUX PAVILION

Call it what you will: dubstep, EDM, house, drum and bass…Joshua Steele captures the core of intense sound that house-heads live for. Hailing from the U.K. under the stage name Flux Pavilion, the 28-year-old DJ sequences sounds that run the gamut of musical instrumentation that consistently hands showgoers an extraordinary audio/visual experience. Though he is wholly immersed in the electronic genre, he works to subvert anything that’s become cliche within his musical circles. Sharing his fervent creativity and love of music has garnered the fierce DJ loyalty and respect among leaders in the scene. Expect unadulterated EDM that builds up with intention and explodes with tenacity, yet remains true with heart.
