PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Since their early 2000s self-released EP, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have built a presence on consistently classic indie pop. Led by erstwhile vocalist/guitarist Kip Berman, the EP interested audiences with its pitch-perfect take on the fuzzy ‘80s aesthetic. Their 2009 self-titled debut album featured more substantial songwriting without sacrificing their melancholy nostalgia, while their two subsequent studio albums — Belong (2011) and Days of Abandon (2014) — saw the POBPAH trading their sound for more ‘90s-flavored alt-rock soundscapes. The transition was praised as impressively smooth, granting them an escape from the ‘80s and moving them all the way up to the ‘90s.

SERENGETI

BY JONNA NEWBERRY

An electric mix of emo, indie, rock, electronica and rap, Chicago’s own Serengeti is making himself known beyond his immediate environment. His last full-length, Kenny Dennis III (which completed the illustrious Kenny Dennis trilogy), fleshes out the character of Kenny and the journey through his life while showcasing Serengeti’s unwavering pride in being a Chicagoan. One of his popular songs “No Beginner” provides a nice introduction to his style, which is unafraid to make political comments in his lyrics while at the same time referencing Chicago sports and food like a true fanboy.

RISE AGAINST

BY KAREN HEERINGA

Still famously straight-edge and active as ever in various animal rights organizations, all members of Rise Against are now well past that age when they were first considered adult punks. Although they started out on the small-ish punk label Fat Wreck Chords, it seems typical for bands to throw once-treasured ideals out the window after signing to a label like Geffen. But Rise Against haven’t, and that really says something about the kind of music they make and who they make it for. They still sound like something between screamo and rock just like they did when they began, which may or may not be a plus depending on who you ask.

REBIRTH BRASS BAND

BY ERIN MALYSA

This band is walking history. Formed in 1983 in New Orleans, Rebirth Brass Band has been uncorking their trademark ass-shaking combo of funk, jazz and soul for over 30 years now. A rotating line-up of musicians is the norm with this always-evolving crew, but Keith and Philip Frazier remain two of the original members alongside more famous founder Kermit Ruffins, who still jams with the band regularly. The essence and fun of this group is not who is in the band, however, but how they make the audience groove. Popular in their hometown thanks to regular gigs at iconic NOLA venues like The Maple Leaf but with a well-established fan base nationally, Rebirth won a Grammy in 2011 for “Best Regional Roots Music Album.” But they don’t care about any of that. They care about making you dance, and making you smile while doing so.
