PROTOMARTYR

Detroit-reared post-punk quartet Protomartyr began their career in ’08 as a two-piece locomotive with guitarist Greg Ahee and drummer Alex Leonard in tow, performing under the less enigmatic moniker Butt Babies. Joe Casey soon joined the brood on vocals, as did fellow Detroit rocker/Tyvek frontman Kevin Boyer. After Boyer left to focus on Tyvek, bassist Scott Davidson came on and Protomartyr was born. Over their increasingly brilliant three-album oeuvre — No Passion All Technique, Under Color of Official Right, and The Agent Intellect — Protomartyr have gradually and gorgeously whittled away the stale confines of the aging post-punk genre to make your older brother’s music cool again.

PANTHA DU PRINCE

Hendrik Weber is German bred-and-buttered. Under the moniker Pantha Du Prince, he meticulously structures electronic beats that smash the hell out of the humdrum sameness of typical electronic music. Bringing forth more than tracks that just ripple and shake crowds, the veteran artist/producer conceptualizes thoughtful music that precisely exhibits his innovation and creativity in the genre. Outstanding records include his ideas of connection (The Triad) and being alone (Black Noise) that come to life through synths, percussion, bass, guitar and his own vocals. Each composition sounds as if he has a full band backing him overflowing with intention and talent. He rolls solo though, making music that can adapt to almost any person or place.

OVERCOATS

Overcoats is a New York-based female duo consisting of former college roommates Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell who create a sound that combines electronic elements with harmonic, faint-like melodies that play out like orgasms for your ears. With their widely acclaimed self-titled debut EP released in June 2015, they are able to create songs that are intimate and personal by showcasing smooth, spacious and eloquent brooding paired with simple indie pop elements. The duo are greatly in sync creatively and the end result is a perfectly vulnerable sound that is immediately infectious to all those who come into contact.

NIGHTLANDS

Side project from The War on Drugs bassist Dave Hartley, Nightlands is a trippy journey through what you think would be an actual place in your dreams called The Nightlands. Hartley keeps the calm and gentle melodies of The War of Drugs but adds his own experimental touch to these slightly off-putting cinematic masterworks. His second full length, Oak Island, is a foggy mixtape where Hartley plays with reality and adds a sense of nostalgia with synth-pop beats and a robotic vocal delivery. If you think you would love to step into another dimension, let Nightlands be your spirit guide.
