JR JR

BY SAMANTHA LOPEZ

Formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., JR JR are a playful Michigan-based duo consisting of Daniel Zott and Joshua Epstein who met while playing in other musical projects originating in Detroit back in 2010. The two combine stylistic elements of indie pop, electronic and synth into one seriously stacked sound. Their songs are heavy in fuzz distortion and lo-fi aesthetic steered by breathy dream-pop vocals that produce a bedroom rock vibe that’s both whimsical and ethereal. The duo has released countless EPs and singles since 2010 and in 2015, under their abbreviated new moniker, released their self-titled and third studio album on Warner Bros.

JEAN-MICHEL JARRE

BY ANGIE MARTIN

To say the least, Jean-Michel Jarre has an impressive history. Forty plus years ago, the ambient and electronic genre was mostly unheard of until the 68-year-old French composer and performer made multiple avant-garde albums that showcased the core of these emerging genres. We really could say he was one of the pioneers of ambient electronic that blankets a multitude of instruments over a spectacular laser and light display. His presence, music and personality are so significant that he’s made the Guinness Book of World Records numerous times, was named “Personality of the Year” by People magazine (back when people were awarded for their character and not their appearance), and even has an asteroid named after him. So yeah, he’s kind of a big deal.

GIRLPOOL

BY JAMIE ROBASH

The fact that their band name is derived from Kurt Vonnegut’s quirky, dystopian novel Cat’s Cradle (and also a rather jaunty pun in and of itself) sets the precedent for what one should expect from the rather predictable bourgeoning milieu of a generation coming of age in the indie-tech musical age. But this drummer-less duo of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad are not Bandcamp wayfarers nor are they viral internet sensations, but rather two twentysomethings who bet the listener would succumb to their cunning and cutesiness whilst they craft serious songs from a perspective not often taken all that seriously: that of a young woman.

FUTURE

BY LINDSEY SHAW

Future got his start after a clairvoyant cousin and fellow Dungeon Family collective member urged the Atlanta native to hone his writing skills and concentrate heavily on rapping. Praised for coming as close as any artist to seamlessly coalesce rapping and singing with the aid of Auto-Tune, he’s a master of the mixtape who’s come a long way since peddling his self-proclaimed works of grandeur. Six studio albums later, the gritty wordsmith is recognized well beyond his initial small circles, bringing a pointedly animated and unavoidably provocative sound to our airwaves. His latest installment HNDRXX features collaborations with fellow artists of the moment such as Rihanna and The Weeknd.
