Jumping from venues such as Lincoln Hall and Schubas to the United Center is the sort of story any 14-year-old girl or small town boy dreaming of starting a band would covet. Yeah okay, so they’re playing with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they still have to be more than okay to get the okay from a band like that. Playing music that moms will never understand, the always-enigmatic experimental rockers of Deerhoof sometimes sound like they put all of their throwaway songs on the album on purpose instead of the beautiful ones they know people would like. 23 years later, the experiment still seems to be working.

The saying “as American as apple pie” was most likely started in the Midwest, where days pass slower, summers last longer and the seasons teach you lessons about life. Sarah Vos and Daniel Wolff hail from Wisconsin, recorded their latest album in Nashville with Ken Coomer (Wilco and Uncle Tupelo) and create a space between folk rock and a more modern take on high lonesome. Their sophomore follow-up to Space and Time is 2016 release Cartoon Moon, which features the solemn vocals of Vos paired against sweet twanging notes from the mandolin. On leadoff song “Golden Sky,” Vos delicately harmonizes with Wolff and calls out: “We must not lose sight / oh the golden, golden sky / oh the mirrors in your eyes.” It’s a record of hope and accomplishment, but also of the struggles in life that eventually lead to strength.

DAY WAVE

Day Wave sounds like the makings of a small squadron of twentysomethings who cut their teeth on the dreamy pop rock that has infiltrated the indie rock scene in the last half-decade. But in practice, Day Wave’s primary singer/songwriter Jackson Phillips brews up his saccharine sweet, atmospheric guitar and synth pop concoctions alone in the confines of his Oakland bedroom. His idyllic lovelorn lyricism seals the deal as he sweetly begs over searing synths: “Promise me you won’t run away with my heart / Promise me you’re not trying to kill me” — proving chivalry isn’t dead, just terrified.

Somewhere between De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Kendrick and Chance sits Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., more colloquially known as Common. From underground rap hero to hip hop icon, Common has become one of Chicago’s most influential fixtures in pop culture throughout the last two decades. A recipient of Grammys and Oscars alike for his musical prowess, the Chicago native and socially conscious luminary has metamorphosed between record label entrepreneur, actor, writer, model and back. Throughout every artistic revival, he’s been simultaneously grounded in humility and cultural awareness, which is always eloquently expressed in works such as his most recent album, Black America Again.
