You’d think a group that goes by the name Mt. Joy would stick to writing cheerful, optimistic ballads, but don’t be fooled: this 5-piece indie folk band illustrates the profound, frustrated undertones of today’s youth in their records. Listen closely to their single “Sheep” and you’ll detect a call to arms to unify our nation in the midst of our current bewildered state. “When there is blood on the streets of Baltimore / Kids are getting ready for a long war / Maybe I was born in the wrong skin / But those sheep are rolling in the mud again”. Pals since high school, Mt. Joy founders Matt Quinn (vocals/guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) lead the sophisticated quintet on their U.S. tour this summer.

MARSHMELLO

Add another faceless and elusive yet seemingly omnipresent DJ to the list. Marshmello, the electronic music mixer and producer who’s rumored to be American DJ Chris Comstock, wears a customized helmet during his public (non)-appearances. His sound and head gear have been inspired by electro house music producer/DJ Deadmau5, while he shares a manager with fellow remix master Skrillex. First gaining recognition for reconfiguring songs by Jack U and Zedd, Marshmello’s musical style follows a dance groove-oriented theme propped up by synth and bass-heavy electronics similar to his counterparts. The masked electronic henchman released his album Joytime in 2016 through his own label Joytime Collective, with the track “Alone” popping up on the U.S. Billboard “Hot 100” list in January.

Few things scream “badass musician” more than a black-haired rocker chick penning songs from Long Island. Singer/famous songwriter Laura Pergozilli fits the bill, plus more cool packed into a small frame than you can possibly imagine. Not only does she make her own sultry, stunning tunes, she has written award-winning tracks performed by the world’s greatest pop divas from Cher to Rihanna. Growing up in the MTV generation when the network actually played music videos, Pergozilli stood out as a timely songwriter. A decade later, she’s bold enough to use her initials as her moniker and expects everyone to know who the hell she is.

LE BUTCHERETTES

Le Butcherettes play the music flies dance to when they hover over rotting meat. The nauseous sweetness of the band’s day-of-the-dead flavored reverie has attracted collaborations with the likes of Iggy Pop and John Frusciante, but the guests take on Le Butcherettes’ flavor when they come to visit — not the other way around. Le Butcherettes lovingly hack their influences to bits and serve them up to the audience still bloody and raw. In lead singer Terri Gender Bender’s native Guadalajara, this gory aesthetic is referred to as “amarillismo.” (Gender Bender herself translates it as “morbid media.”) In a live performance she’s a sight to behold, pulling triple duty as a guitarist, singer and conduit for otherworldly horrors. She twists and bends back to punctuate moments of drama like a Teddy Ruxpin whose circuits have been hacked by David Cronenberg. Note by note she can transform any audience into a hive-mind Alice, lost in a wonderland where death, violence, life and festivity are hopelessly jumbled and misidentified.
