HAR MAR SUPERSTAR

Sean Tillmann has been involved in music for years, beginning in high school garage bands and soon going on his own in part to create his infamous alter ego (or twin, depending on who you ask) Har Mar Superstar. Ladies man and near-nude aficionado, Har Mar Superstar can seduce you with his old school R&B doo-wop jams and sexy indie pop hooks. His more recent album, last year’s Best Summer Ever, delved into ‘80s pop trends with “Anybody’s Game” serving as the perfect embodiment of the trend — complete with thumping synths and echoing vocals to go along with his trademark hairy beer belly cool.

FUTURE ISLANDS

If asked what moment catapulted rising electropop trio Future Islands to national attention, most would point to their dazzling performance — led by frontman Samuel T. Herring — of “Seasons (Waiting on You)” on Late Night with David Letterman. The viral segment led many to discover the Baltimore-based group’s impeccably seductive discography: an explosion of emotion and synth heralded by 2008’s studio debut Wave Like Home. From 2010-2011, they released two records on influential local label Thrill Jockey (In the Fall and In the Evening Air) before signing onto 4AD for 2014’s Singles and 2017’s The Far Fields — bringing forth a more polished, accessible sound and a raging live show to go with it.

FLOGGING MOLLY

Making the transition from performing in a British hard rock band to leading a seven-piece Celtic punk group may sound like a difficult task, but Flogging Molly frontman Dave King seems to have done so with ease. After leaving his duties leading British hard rock act Fastway, King retained a record deal with Epic Records and was even asked to sing for Jeff Beck (he declined). However, once realizing that the label would not know what to do with the music he was creating for what would eventually become Flogging Molly, King was asked to be let go from the label. At first playing weekly gigs at a local pub before building a small but loyal following, King eventually filled out the lineup with fiddle player Bridget Regan and Dennis Casey alongside Nathen Maxwell taking over guitar and bass, respectively. Five albums and many a drunken night later, Flogging Molly is due to drop their newest album Life Is Good — which should help remind us that, if it isn’t already, life will indeed be good at least for the moment.

EXCISION

We have Canada to thank for bacon, hockey, Justin Trudeau’s physique, and now Excision. Canadian sound guru Jeff Abel has been around since 2004, but first released an album in 2007. He frequently works with fellow Canadian dubstep producers Datsik and Downlink, as well as the up-and-coming producer Dion Timmer who adds a Netherlands influence to the mix. Known for his manic 150,000 Watts of Bass tours, Excision is a resident go-getter and recently founded the label Destroid Music in addition to launching The Paradox tour in 2016 — reminiscent of his previous high-voltage master classes in electronic excess.
