THE FEELIES

by Erin Malysa

Sometimes your band breaks up, sometimes you record additional albums, but one thing is true: you get older. But age isn’t necessarily a bad thing and, in the case of The Feelies, it allows you to brew an album so rich and powerful you’d guess it came out in 1981. New Feelies release In Between carefully curates 11 new tracks packed with unnerving guitars and hushed vocals that give an eerie presence to songs like “Been Replaced” and “Stay the Course.” It’s like they’ve crawled out of a time capsule to greet the future, but you’re not sure if their intentions are good. Songs like “Time Will Tell” and “Make It Clear” bring back a lighter jangly guitar vibe with airy tambourine that overlays the easygoing drum beat. This album sneaks up on you like a midnight walk home where it feels like someone is following you, before you brush it off and feel safe again. But then a twig snaps and you want to know what the fuck is out there.

GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC

by Amanda Sanchez

Even if you only know them from their smoke-filled appearance in ‘90s Jeremy Piven romp PCU, there’s no denying that George Clinton changed the scene of R&B back in the ‘70s. Taking soul music and funk and twisting it in sounds similar to Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, the 75-year-old Clinton formed The Parliaments way back in 1955. In the ‘70s, Clinton performed under both Parliament (which was described as a funk free for all) and Funkadelic, which was more psychedelic rock-based. Collectively, Clinton had gathered together 50 musicians to assemble both of these legendarily spaced-out, groove-heavy groups. In the meantime, he has managed to acquire 40 hit R&B singles, including three number ones and three platinum albums. He has a Grammy, a Dove, an MTV Music Award, and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. But he doesn’t really care about all that. He cares about having a blast on stage. And it shows.

S U R V I V E

Despite the ‘90s making an official comeback in the form of crop tops, chokers, and endless revival series, it’s the ‘80s that’s taking over music — especially with the analog sounds of Austin electronic band S U R V I V E. Comprised of Kyle Dixon, Michael Stein, Adam Jones, and Mark Donica, their music is reminiscent of dystopian ‘80s film scores. It’s no wonder that two of the members, Dixon and Stein, were picked to create the score of the sci-fi nostalgia series Stranger Things, though they focused more heavily on purposely creating an ‘80s vibe for that project. Their more recent album, RR7349, comes in at nine instrumental tracks of layered synths and cavernous reverb like in “Copter,” perfect for a set timed for twilight. Their sound can be uplifting and fun for a night on the town, but as a full group their music reaches a much deeper level.

MADLIB

by erin Malysa

The first step towards understanding Madlib is acceptance…as in accepting the fact that he is a true musical wizard. His crate collection is not deep, it’s almost infinite with an estimated weight of his record collection clocking in at nearly 8,000 pounds. He dissects a song by finding the hook, stripping it down, sprinkling some funky Madlib dust on top and what hits your ears is solid gold. Maybe his innate musical understanding comes from his family, maybe it’s because his first love was jazz, maybe it’s because he plays several musical instruments so finding a beat is like flipping through a stack of vinyl at his fingertips. Everyone from Jay-Z to Kanye West wants his beats and they greedily stockpile them like a squirrel in winter. Watch this rapper, producer, musician and collaborator perform and keep your ears tuned, because he is the master of pulling musical rabbits from his limitless top hat of sonic tricks.
