THE MOUNTAIN GOATS

BY WILLIAM LENNON

Though they’ve been with us for decades now, The Mountain Goats still find ways to surprise us. Take 2015’s Beat The Champ, a concept album whose foundation was the mythology of the backyard wrestling scene of the 1980s. On the surface, it’s pretty different from albums like All Hail West Texas or The Sunset Tree, but they exist in the service of the same sense of pathos and longing, with or without the frog masks and capes. Their newest project tackles another specific moment in time, the rise of a vampiric caste of 20-somethings that sprang up around bands like The Cure. Whether or not you were a Goth or loved wrestling, and regardless of whether you grew up in Texas, you can almost certainly find a way to connect with (and love) The Mountain Goats.

THE HOLD STEADY

BY LISA MROCK

As a veteran of the Minneapolis indie and punk scenes, Craig Finn of The Hold Steady holds a special place in his heart for Chicago and a continued devotion to the Empty Bottle. And to help the legendary local venue celebrate its 25th year in existence, Finn and his Hold Steady bandmates are performing all weekend long in the city. The newest album from these iconic barroom rock poets Teeth Dreams came out in 2014, but remastered deluxe versions of earlier albums have come out since then to help tide you over until their next installment of bottle-soaked beauty that reaffirms your belief in the power of traditional rock and roll. Of course, why listen to those when you can hear them live with a few friends?

THE APPLESEED CAST

BY JONNA NEWBERRY

Founded during the early days of the genre, The Appleseed Cast is still nothing if not emo. Over 10 years old, the mopey Midwestern band from Lawrence, Kansas have found the magic formula to still grow strong even in today’s post-emo musical climate. Their most notated album to date is 2001 release Low Level Owl Vol. I & II, a deep dive into moody guitar soundscapes and emotionally filled lyrics that showcases their mastery of the math-y ethereal indie emo sound. For fans of The Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real Estate.

SURFER BLOOD

BY TESSA SOLOMON

Of the surf rock movement, Surfer Blood stands out with their cheerful, West Palm-sunny sound. Formed by high school pals who soon found themselves touring in support of Art Brut and Japandroids, the buzz built around a debut album and 2010’s Astro Coast was met with a spot on the Billboard Top 200. Later that year the band released the Tarot Classics EP, soon followed by the more polished major-label debut Pythons. Experiencing a lineup shake-up after founding member Thomas Fekete fought and succumbed to cancer in 2015, 2017’s Snowdonia features the newly reinvigorated indie band’s most dynamic sound to date.
