SILVERSUN PICKUPS

Hard to think it was over a decade ago that Silversun Pickups released their debut album Carnavas off Dangerbird Records, but thankfully they’re still churning out quality songwriting and melodies — more recently with their fourth LP Better Nature released off their own label New Machine Recordings. They’ve played around with adding electro touches to the lush and layered instrumentals they’re known for, especially pronounced on tracks like “Pins and Needles.” Meanwhile, album standout “Nightlight” is a heavy, driven track that pushes the blood through your brain. The Pickups will be supporting Third Eye Blind this time around, so turn your nightlights on to get ready for a super-charged retro night.

SIGUR ROS

If you’ve been looking for a musical experience that combines ambient and experimental rock with otherworldly falsetto vocals spoken in gibberish, Sigur Ros is the band for you. Not least of which being the simple reason that they are the only band you will find performing in a non-literal language called Vonslenka created by guitarist/vocalist Jonsi. One listen to Sigur Ros will show you that although unintelligible vocals do exist in many of their songs, they exist simply as another dimension to the already beautifully crafted world you are taken to by the underlying and at times complex instrumental work at play. Known for their soundtracks as much as their studio albums, the band is also highly renowned for their live performances, at times performing shows which allow fans to livestream and take full control of the camera. When all is said and done, no amount of words in English or Vonslenka can express what a beautiful cinematic adventure Sigur Ros can send you on with their music.

SIDEWALK CHALK

Sidewalk Chalk is Chicago hip hop with big band attitude and theatrical style, and their upcoming album An Orchid Is Born is yet another extension of this defining aesthetic. The first track released from the album, the darker-toned and slightly industrial “Dig,” is a bristly commentary of how it feels to be afraid of the places you know, with a few references to the ever-happening innocent shootings of African-Americans by trigger-happy cops who shouldn’t have guns in the first place. The second track called “A Suite For Black Lives” is pretty self-explanatory, so come get woke with Sidewalk Chalk this summer.

SEU JORGE

One of the coolest ways to introduce someone to David Bowie is to introduce them to Seu Jorge. From when he was 10 years old, Jorge worked his way up from a mechanic living on the street to performing as an internationally recognized musician. The Brazilian singer/guitarist’s rise to prominence was accelerated greatly by his fantastic album of Bowie covers made famous by Wes Anderson’s 2004 film The Life Aquatic. Jorge often references the film in his live performances, projecting clips from it on a large sail positioned behind him as he plays. Even Bowie himself acknowledged that Jorge brought his songs to a “new level of beauty.” Less well known outside of his native Brazil (where he is a superstar) is Jorge’s fantastic original work. He hopes to be to Brazil what Bob Marley was for Jamaica, a musician who plays to an international audience but projects a powerful, progressive message back home.
