ALT-J

by Jimby Sisto

The term “spacey somber prog rock” may not be an actual genre label that gets thrown around, but nevertheless seems to encapsulate English indie rock band ALT-J quite well. Known for their crooning harmonies and funky, desolate guitar riffs, this band has been on everyone’s lips at one point or another. Ten years into their career, Alt-J finds themselves looking inward to create some truly haunting jams. 2017’s RELAXER finds the band digging deeper within to draw up a resonance that somehow feels both familiar and alien. Songs like “Adeline” and “3WW” bring their distinct styling to the forefront to pronounce them as truly mystic innovators. Wonky, wild, and whimsical, there’s a reason this band gets related to the likes of Radiohead. There’s little doubt Alt-J will bring the fire and the funk, while also reeling back to make you believe you’re on a rowboat at dusk with some eerie mist pooling over the lake.

ROYAL BLOOD

Did you hear? In 2017, rock music declared: “I ain’t dead yet.” The resuscitators of the genre have arrived, dressed in all black and ready to buck with only a bass guitar, tons of effects pedals, and a drum kit that takes more abuse than a politically-charged Reddit post. After a long hiatus, Royal Blood have released their sophomore album How Did We Get So Dark? The new tracks are groovier than the self-titled debut from Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher, yet just as great. New singles “Lights Out” and “Hook, Line and Sinker” get your heart racing and your feet moving while classic tracks like “Little Monster” and “Out of the Black” bring the matches and gasoline to the party. Royal Blood have a flair for live performances, especially at festivals, so forget everything you know about their studio sound. Extended guitar solos and mid-song crowd surfing are common, as is some good old-fashioned moshing.

THE KILLERS

Like a junkie chasing the feeling of that first high, The Killers seem to have been chasing the success of debut album Hot Fuss their entire career. Unfortunately for them, they’ve so far been unsuccessful. Fortunately for us, that means more amazing music from the once-mighty Las Vegas rockers. Their 2017 release Wonderful Wonderful may be the closest they’ve come to replicating the magic of their early work, yet regardless of how closely they get to that studio success their live performances have only gotten better over the years. A festival staple in both Europe and the United States, The Killers get top billing at this year’s Lolla because they’ve earned it. A stadium sound with intimate lyrics and world-class stage presence makes for a potent concert experience no matter how you slice it. The high of seeing The Killers live is enough to keep us chasing it every chance we get.

LITTLE DRAGON

Little Dragon is the soundtrack to a tripped-out slumber, the music you wish were playing when Dorothy and her crew fell asleep among the charmed poppies. With the release of their fifth studio album Season High, the Swedish experimental electro-pop group evokes thoughts of a luxurious trip to an alternate dimension. Yukimi Nagano’s breezy vocals permeate synth-heavy, laid-back grooves like thick smoke — and it’s enchanting as hell. The album balances tensions of darkness and light juxtaposed with themes of helplessness and hopefulness, most evident in tracks like “Sweet” where the lines between love and addiction are as fuzzy as the bassline. These veterans of the pop scene — oftentimes more notorious for their guest features with the likes of Gorillaz, Big Boi, and Flume than their solo projects — have evolved a great deal since their debut 10 years ago. They are certain to both provoke and bewitch.
