LORDE

by Karen Heeringa

She’s got too many names to be professionally called EML-YO (although that would rule), so Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor prefers to go by the moniker Lorde. Maybe you’ve heard of her. Just a wee young thing, Lorde’s been gifted with a voice that sounds like a chain-smoking 50-year-old lounge singer from 1935. Her new album Melodrama wants to be “Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell” put together, and so far it could be seen as such (it’s definitely moody and dark at times.) The critical and commercial acclaim that this 20-year-old New Zealander receives with every passing release is almost boring at this point, and new tracks like “Green Light” and “Perfect Places” will continue to keep commuting singers occupied while stuck in traffic. While these new tracks will be great to hear live, one can count on Lorde wooing the crowd with her famous track “Royals” — lest there be riots on the CTA trains after her set.

SPOON

The word “pioneer” is thrown around somewhat haphazardly when it comes to the world of rock ‘n’ roll journalism. Yet you’d have to recuse yourself from the business if you weren’t to include Spoon on a Mt. Rushmore dedicated to indie music of the last 20 years. Britt Daniel and company have carved their name firmly into the genre’s core, yet continue to thwart expectations by creating some of the catchier blues-rock jams out there. While classic hits like “I Turn My Camera On” and “Cherry Bomb” are sure to have squadrons of people cutting a rug at the mere mention of them, their ninth album Hot Thoughts is a shining example of a band hungry to continue innovating. Austin sure has a lot of wonderful things to contribute to the world such as Dirty Sixth, Hippie Hollow, and the wildly stellar rock band Spoon. Dig in and get crunchy with them.

CAGE THE ELEPHANT

by Justin Trudell

The only person who hangs out at Lollapalooza more than the guys from Cage the Elephant is probably Perry Farrell. Riding their seemingly never-ending touring schedule, Cage the Elephant still found a way to record new album Tell Me I’m Pretty way back in 2016 (which seems like 15 tours ago.) It’s been an evolution for Cage as they’ve grown from the raucous rock of their first two albums into a more interesting but still incredibly catchy electronic rock tour de force, with notable help from Black Keys guitarist/erstwhile producer Dan Auerbach. Fans of early Cage can still rest easy, though, as Matt Shultz and the boys can still get as berserk as we’ve all come to expect. While we’ve long since lost count of how many times these Bowling Green, Kentucky expats have graced the Lolla stage, they always bring the thunder. And sometimes even the rain.

LIAM GALLAGHER

by Mar Medel

While he was likely too cool to give a fuck, Liam Gallagher was voted “the greatest frontman of all time” by Q magazine back in 2010. For all the true Britpop lovers out there, the polemic lead singer is releasing his debut solo album As You Were in October of this year. Produced by Greg Kurstin (who has collaborated with artists like Adele, Beck, The Shins and Lilly Allen), As You Were is defined by Gallagher himself as an album that follows a classic line but is “done his way.” And judging by lead track “Glass Walls”, it seems that Gallagher’s iconic voice has no problem taking us back to his early ‘90s glory days. After more than two decades in the music business and nine albums released with Oasis and Beady Eye, the younger of the Gallaghers is back in the spotlight. And he doesn’t give a fuck if you like it or not.
