JAWBREAKER

by Erin Malysa

Whatever you do, don’t miss this set. If nothing else, you owe them respect as they were influential to most of the bands you listen to (even though you probably don’t know it). The chief reason for this outsized influence is their lyrical and melodic genius that, in breaking down the scene in 1990 with Unfun, was able to capture their point of view on life, love, friends and everything in between. If you caught this band at the right age, they were everything your little world could handle. Snotty and sneering, jealous and lonely, broken and carrying on, rebellious and volatile, it was everything you were feeling and probably still are. It’s been over 20 years and they’ve gone on to start other bands and projects, but it’s the convergence of this band in the late ‘80s that created the stigma and magic that still hangs around them today. Best viewed alone with a box of memories.

BAD BRAINS

Emerging in the early ‘80s hardcore scene with a pioneering sound that earned them cult status along the East Coast (with their fan base strongest in their native Washington, D.C.), Bad Brains’ blend of reggae and punk helped them forge an unmistakable presence in the States. The band was founded way back in 1977 as a distinctive jazz-fusion ensemble named Mind Power by Dr. Know, yet a growing fascination with raw voices such as Sex Pistols and Black Sabbath inspired a sharp turn in sound. Rechristened Bad Brains (after the Ramones song), their newfound punk eventually met reggae. Obvious talent, complex rhythms, and the singularity of an entirely black band thriving in the era’s primarily white punk scene set them apart from the rest. Due to intense internal turmoil and health issues (with frontman H.R. undergoing brain surgery earlier this year), the band has regularly disbanded only to reunite for sporadic shows and tours. Like this special 40th anniversary set.

MIKE D

by Daniella Thompson

Founding member and one-third of The Beastie Boys, musician/rapper Mike D will be performing an hour-long DJ set for Saturday’s Riot Fest attendees. Following the passing of Adam “MCA” Yauch in 2012, Mike D continues to make music and perform regularly yet strays away from performing as The Beastie Boys out of respect for his bandmate’s death. Mike has been continuously sharing music with listeners young and old, recently upping his game through new means of communication. Mike’s Beats 1 Radio show The Echo Chamber is an interesting new platform for him to discuss music with various artists in the business. Recorded in his home Marc Maron-style, the semi-monthly episodes give us a glimpse of what it’s like to have such an expansive knowledge (and interest) in music. Let’s hope that shines through during his DJ set, which will surely include nods to his past, present, and future.

DANZIG

Danzig would be the perfect answer to Riot Fest trivia questions like: “What is the quintessential band playing this year’s Riot Fest?” As far as fans are concerned, Glenn Danzig is Saturday night at Riot Fest. His band is the black band t-shirt your teenage cousin wore to Thanksgiving when you were 12 that first made you realize that there is evil in the world, that serial killers were real, and that sometimes people do bad things and get away with it. Danzig’s put all this to lyrics and spawned it out into the world for decades, ever since the breakup of his iconic band The Misfits in the ‘80s. Everyone will remember the triumphant return of the original lineup of said band at last year’s Riot Fest, and Glenn’s back to prove his solo stuff is still legend and worthy of watching. Perhaps, if you’re lucky, he’ll play a refresher course of last year’s raging set.
