THE RACONTEURS

by Jake McKenzie

When a group of famous musicians forms a new project together, it’s often reflexively labeled a “supergroup.” And no doubt Jack White, Brendan Benson, Patrick Keeler, and Jack Lawrence were individual icons in the blues rock world before they formed The Raconteurs. But they soundly reject the term “supergroup,” claiming it describes something temporary. They prefer to think of their ragtag group as “a new band made up of old friends” and their 2019 release, Help Us Stranger, feels a lot like meeting up with old friends. Their first record in 11 years, this album may not have conquered much new ground, but it proves The Raconteurs can still deliver the same ass-kicking sound that fans love. In true Jack White fashion, the band has been playing a handful of secret shows in tiny clubs, and stalwarts of the bluesy garage-inspired rock sound of the aughts will attest that they rock as hard as ever.

GUIDED BY VOICES

Robert Pollard is nothing if not prolific. The Guided By Voices founder has led an ever-evolving lineup through 35 years and a ridiculous number of albums, two of which were released this year. It wouldn’t surprise most that a third album, titled Sweating the Plague, is ready to drop this fall. The lead single “Heavy Like the World” delivers another helping of the sound Pollard is now synonymous with: big, loose, anthemic guitar pop. To quote the press release, the LP was “constructed as a classic 12-song album experience, meant to be played loud.” An efficient offering, given the double length of the last two records, Travis Harrison’s production sits nicely on the precipice of lo-fi while not sacrificing too much luster. The current lineup featuring guitarist Doug Gillard, drummer Kevin March, guitarist Bobby Bare Jr., and bassist Mark Shue promises to bring forth a marathon set spanning their entire catalog. Pack plenty of beer.

AGAINST ME!

Against Me!’s iconic 2002 debut, Reinventing Axl Rose, was an instant punk classic. It was just so good, so raw, and so punk that some fans accused the band of selling out when they signed with legendary punk label Fat Wreck Chords the following year. Little did the naysayers know, Against Me!’s meteoric rise to power was only just beginning…and “selling out” remained the furthest thing from their agenda. When singer Laura Jane Grace came out as trans in 2012, she became a seminal figure in the trans rights movement overnight. But as Laura insists, she’s not a spokesperson — just a rocker, which is evident when you hear a lifetime of pent-up rage spill out across the band’s 2014 release, Transgender Dysphoria Blues. On Sunday, Against Me! is set to play both albums in their entirety. And maybe if we’re lucky and Laura is feeling particularly brave, she’ll encore with her new single “I Hate Chicago.”

RIDE

It’s easy to forget the scope of influence that a band can have until you hear them again. “Future Love”, the latest single from England’s shoegaze pioneers Ride, sits right at home with dozens of young indie bands on the festival circuit nowadays. With a driving rock beat saturated with arpeggiated guitar fuzz — all sitting beneath lush, almost whispered vocal harmonies — the difference between Ride and their legions of acolytes is that they did it first, and still do it best. Their upcoming full-length, This Is Not a Safe Place, is produced by Erol Alkan, who also manned the helm of their 2017 comeback album Weather Diaries. Much like how George Martin is referred to as the fifth Beatle, the producer/artist relationship becomes all important when dealing with music this expansive. Alkan works the faders with the hands of a chemist, as Mark Gardener’s delicate voice swims atop his and Andy Bell’s dynamic dual guitar interplay.
