The best thing a band can do to fuck up its career path is to diverge from the sound that made them who they are. The Beatles did it. So did Bob Dylan. Yet in those cases the gambit paid off, as the moves brought in more new fans than they alienated. San Jose experimental rock quartet Xiu Xiu have never had either of the aforementioned giants’ following and even if they did, it would probably only serve as a catalyst to further try to alienate them. Xiu Xiu makes the music they want to make and if you like it, cool. If not, that’s cool too, a sentiment clearly evidenced by their latest release Plays the Music of Twin Peaks.
