Like all mad geniuses, Jonathan Richman’s foray into the music business was mired. Completely awed by the sound of The Velvet Underground, Richman moved from Boston to New York after graduating high school, living for a time on Velvet’s manager Steve Sesnick’s couch. After a nine-month stint which led nowhere, Richman retreated back to Boston and formed the seminal ‘70s underground art-rock group The Modern Lovers — who disbanded after releasing their sole but seminal eponymous album. Richman has since soldiered on solo, acquiring a loyal crowd of listeners who continue to swoon to his arcane acoustic farce pop.
