If you don’t reflexively turn up BJ the Chicago Kid the moment he comes on the radio, you’re living your life wrong. He’s rap, he’s gospel, he’s talented, and he reps Chicago as much as his more famous friend and collaborator Chance does. Another collaborator is the one and only K-Dot, who shows up on In My Mind’s “The New Cupid,” a masterful amalgam of ‘70s soul samples with a little Raphael Saadiq sprinkled atop Kendrick-style rhymes that are anchored in force by the holy voice of BJ. More recently, BJ came out with “Roses,” a tune about a girl who’s playing him hard but he ain’t fallin’ for it (mostly).
