It’s been three years that we’ve been living in a post-“Boom Clap” world, yet we still hear it on Top 40 and mainstream radio stations as a testament to Charli XCX’s prodigious talent for writing damn good hooks backed by majestic production. Her latest mixtape Number 1 Angel is another step toward Charli going down as one of pop’s most addictive, colorful, and charming artists right now. The infectious “Lipgloss” (featuring Chicago rapper CupcakKe) goes from sweet and sour to down and dirty with cute lines about Charli rotting out a boy’s teeth to CupcakKe explaining just what she’s serving for lunch (hint: it’s not something that can be served on a plate). “3AM (Pull Up)” (featuring MØ) shimmers with lyrics as it tells a certain someone to “fuck off” while somehow still sounding like a kiss to your eardrums. In the end, it’s not surprising. It’s the Charli XCX way.
