LIVE REVIEW: INNERVIEW DOES LOLLAPALOOZA: SUNDAY, 8/5

Sluggish attendees could barely stand by Lolla day four, yet singer Jesse Reyez danced across the American Eagle Stage with die-hard fans, chanting “I like being ugly” from her collaboration with Calvin Harris on “Hard to Love”. She then transitioned into an impromptu cover of Harris’s “One Kiss” (featuring Dua Lipa). Sultry Colombian queen Kali Uchis serenaded devotees in a fringed number, despite high winds and dusty conditions (which actually forced her projection screens to be lowered). Swedish singer Lykke Li set up as Uchis continued, with the oppressive heat somehow intensifying by the hour. In a fashion feat, she donned black vinyl pants and oversized jackets during her show with an emotional setlist that featured older material but also showcased her latest project, So Sad So Sexy. Gucci Mane held it down for Atlanta and gave us all what we wanted: the classics. Styled in Burberry shorts, diamonds, and a killer-watt smile, he revisited fan favorites from “Lemonade” to “Wasted”. Alternative rapper Lil Uzi Vert was booked to perform again at the festival, as last year’s set was cut short due to a weather evacuation. With pyrotechnics and skeleton visuals, Uzi had everyone at Bud Light singing along to “XO Tour Life”. What So Not brought beach inflatables and turned Perry’s into a party (well, more of a party). The Australian producer rocked neon hair (a color that can only be described as “tennis ball”) and included live guitar which really brought something extra. Quinn XCII turned out a huge crowd, which then migrated to closing sets as Playboi Carti took over the American Eagle spot. Carti’s set was a sensory overload, with strobe lights flashing across the moshing crowd. He said anyone who was scared could leave, but that was not happening without hearing “Magnolia” (which soon happened.) And, as expected, total chaos ensued. –BY DANIELLA THOMPSON–PHOTO BY SYDNEY GAWLIK/LOLLAPALOOZA 2018

LIVE REVIEW: INNERVIEW DOES LOLLAPALOOZA, SATURDAY, 8/4

On what was easily the hottest day of the summer, singer Daya looked stunning in a futuristic all-white look and her voice was crystal clear (even performing acapella at one point while experiencing some minor sound issues). Her day three set at Lake Shore included an R.L. Grime cover and new music for eager fans. Perry’s had a huge lineup slated for the day, with sibling duo Hippie Sabotage settings things off early in the afternoon before hip hop legend LL Cool J turned the Bud Light Stage into a family-style picnic, with listeners of all ages pumping their fists to his never-ending roster of hits. B-boys dressed in tracksuits also added to the nostalgic stage setup complete with boombox visuals. Pop phenom Carly Rae Jepsen kicked off her heels (literally) and got down to business in a sequined mini, which reflected beautifully off of the setting sun as she belted out sugary sweet tunes at the Lake Shore Stage. (In a very smart move, sassy UK sensation Dua Lipa was booked on the exact same stage just an hour after Jepsen, so fans didn’t have to move a muscle as they anticipated her arrival.) Bi-racial rapper Logic spoke candidly about mental health and diversity, encouraging acceptance throughout his passionate performance. Despite the heat, fans nestled in and started to secure their spots for the headliners. Vampire Weekend opened their set by playing “A-Punk” three times, and also confirmed that new material is on the way. The front row of the Grant Park Stage was appropriately staffed with medics and water was preemptively passed out ahead of The Weeknd. Abel crooned “Often” and more, while chants from the crowd echoed between sing-alongs and refrains of “F*CK SELENA!” –BY DANIELLA THOMPSON–PHOTO BY ROGER HO/LOLLAPALOOZA 2018

LIVE REVIEW: INNERVIEW DOES LOLLAPALOOZA, FRIDAY 8/3

At the Lake Shore Stage, R&B babe Alina Baraz kicked off Lolla day two by putting a sultry spin on her hits with her golden locks flowing in the sun. Backed by an amazing live band, her deep cuts came to life and kept the crowd stunned throughout her set. Singer Khalid returned the favor by joining her for their collaboration “Electric”. Baraz bystanders then got a two-for-one special as the comically talented Tyler, the Creator gave a spectacular show just across the field at the Grant Park Stage. His technicolor garb mimicked his off-the-wall antics as he encouraged moshing throughout his set. As the sun began to set over at the Tito’s Stage, West Coast rockers The Neighbourhood drew a substantial crowd. After vocalist Jesse Rutherford crooned hits like “Sweater Weather”, their crowd merged into one for Post Malone’s scheduled set. Posty revisited some classics before moving into new terrain from his latest work, Beerbongs & Bentleys. Styled in a graffiti-riddled airbrushed top and shorts, he definitely caught the attention of plenty of new listeners. Meanwhile, Bebe Rexha had fans rushing the stage when she pulled an impromptu encore after her set was over. Despite having a late-night aftershow scheduled later, Canadian DJ Malaa gave it her all at the Perry’s Stage, which resulted in a massive turnout. Crowds soon began to split for the headliners, either heading to the north end of the park to catch The National close out the Bud Light Stage or south to see fan-favorite Bruno Mars on the main stage. Donning a Chicago Bulls jersey, the ever-funky showman Mars closed out the Grant Park Stage with hits like “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Uptown Funk” that kept the crowd dancing as they headed to the gates. –BY DANIELLA THOMPSON–PHOTO BY ROGER HO/LOLLAPALOOZA 2018

LIVE REVIEW: INNERVIEW DOES LOLLAPALOOZA, THURSDAY 8/2

Day one of Lollapalooza 2018 boasted a totally stacked lineup and a favorable forecast. With years of no middle ground between scorching hot weather and torrential downpours, the subtle cloud cover was the perfect accessory to get the four-day festival started. Early fest-goers were treated to a full day of amazing performances, with local acts like Teklife’s DJ Taye and Valee getting things hyped before lunchtime. Avant-garde pop vocalist Allie X showed off her impressive range while dressed like a candy wrapper in a gold lamé piece, stunning the crowd while including songs from her upcoming album Super Sunset. Atlanta producer London on the Track lit up Perry’s Stage, blasting hip-hop hits from the likes of Kodak Black, XXXTentacion, and Rae Sremmurd. All Time Low revived our teen scene dreams, connecting with their audience all throughout the set. (I mean, how can you hear “Dear Maria, Count Me In” and not sing along?) Jaden Smith (yes, son and spitting image of Will Smith) filled the grounds surrounding the American Eagle Stage. Armed with next-level dance moves, Smith entertained young listeners and secured his credibility. Just across the way, Billie Eilish was setting up for her much hyped set, which she performed in a blindingly fluorescent getup while including a cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”. The stage then cleared for Louis Vuitton creative director and Off-White label creator Virgil Abloh, who performed a DJ set opening with the Chicago Bulls theme song. Grammy-nominated soul crooner Khalid reminded us that he has collaborations and connections, with Normani Kordei (of Fifth Harmony) and Alina Baraz both joining him on stage for a couple of songs. Thursday ended with the anticipated Travis Scott show, scheduled just hours before his album Astroworld dropped. Highlights included lasers, stage dives…and even an on-stage wedding proposal.
