The term “spacey somber prog rock” may not be an actual genre label that gets thrown around, but nevertheless seems to encapsulate English indie rock band ALT-J quite well. Known for their crooning harmonies and funky, desolate guitar riffs, this band has been on everyone’s lips at one point or another. Ten years into their career, Alt-J finds themselves looking inward to create some truly haunting jams. 2017’s RELAXER finds the band digging deeper within to draw up a resonance that somehow feels both familiar and alien. Songs like “Adeline” and “3WW” bring their distinct styling to the forefront to pronounce them as truly mystic innovators. Wonky, wild, and whimsical, there’s a reason this band gets related to the likes of Radiohead. There’s little doubt Alt-J will bring the fire and the funk, while also reeling back to make you believe you’re on a rowboat at dusk with some eerie mist pooling over the lake.
